Default Some oem H22A intake manifold tests

First off, I have to thank Jei @ Blacktrax for the manifold and different IMS spacers.
I got to do some testing on my car over the weekend with several different combinations of OEM manifolds.
The setup:
STock JDM BlueTop H23A CH9 block
H22A head Streetmaster port by Alaniz
JUN cams, valvespring, OEM retainers
Hytech header, 3" spugen Exhaust w/ Apexi worldsport 80mm muffler
3" SRI intake w/ Bpi stack and filter
Tuned on Hondata S300 P28 (IAB's not controlled)
... I tuned each setup to about 13.2:1 AFR on 91 octane

The first was a baseline with the Blactrax stage 3 intake manifold and then I added in 2 IMS spacers made specifically for the stage 3 or 4 manifold. The IMS spacers on non-metal.

Next I swapped out the Blacktrax manifold and installed an OEM manifold. You can see the OEM beats it for the most part and the Blacktrax manifold beats it up top. My setup is fairly mild and not made to rev very high, so I figure the staged manifold is better for more radical setups.

Next I pulled the IAB plate out of the manifold and added in 1 Blactrax IMS made for the OEM manifold in place. It seemed to like this combination over the IAB.

The next test was the OEM manifold with 2 Blacktrax IMS' in place and no IAB. It didn't do as well as the single IMS.

The last test was the one I found as the winner for the day. I used 1 Blacktrax IMS and put the OEM IAB on top of it.

All of this may vary from setup to setup, depending on the different combinations of parts used. I also noticed one thing during the test, Shawn had helped to manually keep the IAB shut until about 4000 rpms and let them open and we saw a pretty good jump in power about 7-10 lb/ft in the 3-4000rpm range.
Well, I hope this helps some H series guys out there with some more options.

Wow. The difference between the blacktrax and the OEM manifold is not worth it. You should of threw on a Skunk 2 Pro and see what happened.

I haven't tried pulling the IAB/IMS out completely. I will look for some bolts and try that in the near future.

^that's what happens. To save you some time, it's worth about negative twenty horsepower in the midrange and -2 horsepower on the top end. According to the thread this was also trying to tune whatever power he could with s300, and was only using a VAFC with the stock manifold.

I think the skunk2 pro IM is good with higher cr and bigger cams. Only then will you see gains.

man, the one thing i have been looking for......dyno without the IAB plate, lol.

i have a friend who gave me a blacktrax spacer for christmas and i had been planning on a doing a dyno test between no plate at all and the spacer but wouldnt have minded if someone beat me to it. Looks like i still need to test it, lol.

cool results tho. I've always speculated about the IAB spacers. The OEM manifold with the IMS seemed to be your best result. Is that what you stuck with?

Thanks for testing this out. ME and bb4ever have been discussing proper IM sizing for the past few weeks and this is just leading me to believe that increasing size of the plenum isn't the way to go on a stock displaced h22.

Man i really wish you would have tested no iab plate, that would have saved me soooo much speculation, lol. Thanks for helping us out

BTW, you should post this in the lude section.

Good evidence to support my thinkin all of long...Honda made a good manifold for the H22A for performance...

Good info

Least your smart enough not to rip that H23 to 9k...

Great post mate. Very interesting to see the IMS + IAB combination yielded the best results

Well done.

It's always good to see someone doing some dyno comparisons without looking to sell a certain product

I wonder if it would make any difference on the last setup, if the IAB plate was fitted under the IMS, so the extra capacity was added to the plenum side?
