How dealerships do trade-in and appraisals...?
I need some help from someone who either works at a Honda dealership or knows about this topic. I know its been talked about before, but I couldnt find that post. Here it goes - I have an automatic 2006 Rallye red civic EX with 5500 miles, 15% tint all around, Flawless. I want to trade it in for the 2006/7 SI coupe. Heres my thoughts/questions. How much would I get in a trade-in at a Honda dealership? (I live in suburbs like 30 min. of phila.) How can I talk the dealership into dropping their 4,000 mark-up to atleast retail, or is that even possible anymore? KBB (I know they suck) says trade-in for my car is over 18,000. Wrong right? Thought so - any input? BTW - I owe like <14k?

first off
go far away
you can get a dealer in brooklyn ny to pick up an si at sticker. zero markup.
start EARLY one day and hit a few dealers
dont be afraid to go HOURS away for your car
maximize deal.... at the best dealership
service can be gotten anywhere

The ugly truth is you'll take a major hit on your car. A big chunk of the value comes off when it is first privately licensed. You probably are aware of that.
As for appraisals, they will ask for your keys so someone can "check" your car while they wear you down negotiating the price on the new car. When you realize you're not getting anywhere and want to leave, the person "checking" your car is conveniently out to lunch for another hour or so. Do NOT give them your keys. Offer to accompany them while they do the "appraisal".
But before you go through all that hassle, why not try the method I've used very succesfully at least three times recently....???
E-mail/call every dealer within whatever radius you're comfortable traveling in (50 miles, 250 miles, whatever), and ask for the internet or fleet sales manager. Tell them what you've got and what you want and when you will be buying. Ask for the best price. HOWEVER, you need to be very serious about buying and be prepared to follow through. Do not waste their time just tire-kicking.
After a few rounds of getting succesively lower prices, you will narrow it down to about 3 dealers. Now here is where your honest intent to purchase is very important. When you say "I can come in tommorrow (or in a few days) and finalize this deal, but is that the best you can do?" Wait for their response. Do not actually agree to purchase from them yet. Take that best price and contact the other two dealers to see if they can beat the price or somehow make it worth your while to buy from them. Keep going back and forth between dealers.
Eventually, you will get to the best price. You'll know you've reached that point when they start to cuss at you. At this point you say you may accept their offer if they can throw in some little things, like a couple free oil changes, cheap accessories, etc.
Follow this guide and you should do OK. BTW, through all of this, you will never have stepped foot onto a dealership's property. Simple, clean, straight up negotiating. Your only visit in person to a dealership is to sign the paperwork to finalize the deal. When you do that, do not fall for any games. They may say they overestimated your trade, forgot to add some major $ to the cost of the new car, extended warranty, etc.
Good luck, and be honest about your intent to buy.

I just traded my 06 Ex with 15,012 miles in for an 07 Si and the dealer gave me $15,000 even and they gave me the Si at MSRP. I had to go to California to get my Si in silver and I live in washington..lol..I actually just happened to be in that state. Hope this helps.
A little while back, I asked my dealer about taking in my '06 Si, with 12,000 miles.
The car was worth about $18,500 on trade according to Kelley Blue Book, but they offered me $17,000 because they have prep costs associated with selling the car.
They would probably get the excellent condition suggested retail value of $20,900.
If I want to get rid of the car, I'll start by trying to sell it myself, at $20,500 and go from there.

Take it to Carmax and get a quote. Usually, they will beat the dealers price. My dealer matched mine.
