Default speedometer problems

having problems with my speedometer. It keeps malfunctioning. Sometimes It will work when driving. Then as soon as I downshift or put it in neutral. The needles just drops back to 0. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

man i have the same problem. the only thing different is that mine quit alltogether.i think it might be the ground wire that goes from the tranny to the speedo.does your odometer still work?

yeah my odometer works when the needle works. If the needle doesnt work the odometer will stop.

i have the same problem right now. ultimately you need to find a gauge cluster with about the same mileage, and you can rip the speedo out of that and put it in yours , or just run the new speedo all together. thier is no fix. its internal on the speedo. its a common occurence. unless of course you have a check engine light and that could mean your vss is toast. either way, good luck

What is a VSS. Where is it located at?

if your check engine light isn't on its most likely not your vss. but the vss is a vehicle speed sensor. tells yah how fast your going and counts your mileage. its located on the trasmission. i'll have to see if i can locate a pic.

If your speedo meter is not working but the rest of your gauge is. This is the problem, inside the speedo meter there is a chip. Behind the chip are solders, at some point in time those solders have hairline cracks in them causing them to not have a complete circuit. You can either resolder them if you know how OR go find an old cheap cluster and replace just the chip. When VSS is off or not working your RPM should not be working either. So if your RPM is working, most likly it's the chip. When fuse dies out, the whole cluster should die out with it. Good luck.

Not necessarily. When my VSS went bad it didn't throw a CEL for some reason. Not in my friends car either.

The VSS is located on top of the transmission. Try switching it out with a friend and see if thats the problem

Oh ok now I know what it is. Didnt know it was abbreviated as vehicle speed sensor. Well I recently over tighten the speed sensor and the metal piece broke off. But still in place. Not alot of play. Can that really affect me speedo.

u broke what??? the vss is very sensitive. Sometimes when you remove it and put it on it will throw a code even if you didnt break anything. Could be what lv6l saying but i personally feel your VSS is shot, happened to me before. Best bet is to get sensors brand new from Honda, YES its expensive but thats where i always go for my sensors. I dont like buying used sensors not knowing if their good or not.

Sorry for the thread jack but I seem to be having the same problem. I just swapped my engine a few days ago and now the speedometer goes haywire or just doesn't work at all. I'm running the stock CX cluster for now so I can't look at rpm's. Does anyone have a pic of where the VSS is? How much do they usually cost from honda? Thanks.

Most intelligent or lucky post in this thread.

The teeth on the VSS are most likely worn and when torque is applied to them they turn, when there is no driving force on them they slip. Remove the VSS and check it out. But that is definitely where I would start.

So I was messing around with the VSS because my speedo wasn't working at all. I didn't know where it was so when I found it I cleaned it up a little and just put it back in until I can buy another and everything is working fine. Is the VSS kinda like the main relay which goes bad gradually? Sorry again for the thread jack.
