heater core.
my water temp gauge is going up to the H letter again. and there is coolant and water. i figured out it only does it when i have the heater or defroster on. could it be a clogged heater core?
well... whats harder to check, the thermostat or heater core? i remember my buddys like 87 mercury topaz's heater core went out and me and him put a new one in. we had to almost dissasemble the whole dash... is that the same for our newer cars?

The thermostat is easy to check, but based on what you mentioned in the first post, I'd almost agree that the heater core is source of the blockage.

crap. is it worth me pulling my dash apart? will it hurt the motor? because it does it when im NOT accelerating. that OR my fans turn on and cool the motor not sure. but after its at hot for like 10 seconds it drops all the way to regular temp. when i brought it to the shop down the road i let the guy drive my car around the block a few times and of course it didnt act up... but he said if the fans working u have no problem. ( he was a russian guy so i dont really belive him) ... no offence.

i was in the mcdonalds drive through for like 5 minutes and the whole time i was in it the temp gauge was at the H. when i touched the gas pedal in nuetral while waiting in like i could see it slowly go higher and higher. but then right when i got out and drove for about 15 seconds it goes right back to normal. can that give anyone anymore of an idea of what it could be?

Was the heater on? Because if it wasn't, it's a clogged thermostat for sure.

I'd get one that matches the temperature rating of where you live, maybe even 10 degrees warmer, because I'd rather have the thermostat locked open, instead of closed (whenever it decides to fail).

do you mean the rear defroster? it doesn't make sense that your temp' would rise due to using that.
as far as it being the heater core, it doesn't matter if the heater core is clogged or not. imagine ppl who shut the heater valve. that blocks the passage way completely. also, imagine ppl who bypass the heater core altogether. it just doesn't make sense that the heater core would be the sole reason for your overheating.
pressure test your cooling system, your radiator, your radiator cap. also, does your water ever boil out into the overflow reservoir? are you ever losing coolant? if your thermostat was clogged you should notice a difference in the amount water in your reservoir, especially under hard driving or long driving periods. look at how your water flows through your engine, so you can understand it better. it will give you a better idea.
yes, it is a biznatch to get to the heater core as you would have to remove the entire dash, and other miscellaneous BS. what vehicle is it anyway?
yes, it would be best to start with the easiest stuff first like cap, thermostat, radiator; so on. as far as the thermostat goes, go with OEM from the dealer. it's like less than $20. (i have a long story behind it.)
