starting problem when hot outside
Okay, now the problem I'm having starting my car is getting worse. It's happening more often. Today at one point i could start it and to try and keep it goin i would give it gas but it was still no good it would die. Took me a good 15 minutes to get it started. Also It was hot as all hell today so..... I remember people mentioning heat and relay problems.....idk anything about it so any help and suggestions are well appreciated. Also how do I check to see what the problem is? I'm no mechanic....yet. Also I remember hearing about a recall on some part of the ignition systems of 88-91 civics...which would include my 88 crx si...and I called Honda dealership to ask about it and he said there have been NO recalls on 88 crx's....i need help....
thanks ronnie

ok well i guess you guys might be right...i wont dispute that because you know more than me...but can you tell me why its that? and also how much is the replacement?
The main relay is what switches your fuel pump on when you turn your key in the ignition. Honda's are notorious for main relay's going bad. Main relays are about $40-$45 I think. Try here: http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com
if my main relay is bad how come it only happens when hot outside? and when the next time it happens is there a way for me to check and make absolutely sure the relay is the culprit?? thanks a lot man!

Same thing would happen to my car. If it was sitting in the sun for awhile or it was real hot out the ain relay would die. Just replace and you should be fine. The heat is what is causing it to not functiuon properly.
how do i check to see if thats the problem? i wouldnt wanna spend the money and not fix the problem and also the heat wont bother a new relay?
You should be able to hear the pump kick on when you turn the key to 'on' (or ii). I can't always hear mine though. You can also listen for the relay to click. I'm so deaf that I'm lucky to hear the motor come on, but most people can hear either the pump or the relay. Listen for it when you car does start, then you'll know what you're missing when it doesn't.
My girlfriend's car has a similar problem except it will start, then just die right away. After that it won't start at all for about 10 min. I don't think that its the relay since it starts and then dies. When my relay went, it would just crank as soon as I tried to start it on a hot day. Just some thoughts to help you trouble shoot.
