GSR crank girdle on LS block possible without align hone?
I did do i search and what i found out was that align hone is a must. I was thinking if you used the orignal LS main caps you would not have to. Anyone done this without align honing before?
I would also like to know if its truly neccesary to do this.
I also have original LS main caps that come with the block but i have an aftermarket Gridle. I doubt i need it done but want to make sure with the HT heads.

i have a gsr girdle on my B20 bottom end and it was never align honed/bored.
been running like that for over 3 or 4 years.......
once everything is torqued down and all the clearences are within spec and the crank spins freely there should be no need to align hone/bore the mains.

What modifications need to be done to be able to make the girdle fit properly. To me looks like all that needs to be done is maybe the middle main cap needs to be machined down.

yes the middle main cap needs to be machined down.....and you need to have the holes slightly enlarged to fit the dowel pins from the girdle......
you also need the 6 main bolts from a B18C as well as the windage tray and oil pick-up..

if you do some how make the b18c main girdle fit the b18a/b or b20 mains and do not put dowels in it you might as well not have the girdle, it will do nothing for you, and if you do get the dowels in then torque it down with b18c torque specks you will need to line bore the block, because your bearing clearance will not be right, same with the after market girdle if you put one on your changing your torque specks you will need to line bore the block, other wise just don't run it because your wasting your time if its not done right it will do more damage then good

its not going to cost much to align hone it so dont take a chance and blow your motor because you didnt want to spend the extra 50 bucks
be careful not to line hone the block, it needs to be line bored there is a difference, line hone will damage your block, a good line bore should run you around 200 or so
Robert, technically what is the difference between the two techniques? Is it possible to align bore/hone the mains without moving the crank centerline? And what about the oil pump if the centerline is moved?

A line bore is with a cutting tool and will cut the aluminum of the block and the steel mains equally . a line hone is with a honing stone and will take more off the aluminum then the steel mains. what we do to avoid taking to much off the block and messing up the oil pump center line and crank center line is we shave a little off the bottom of the main caps so that when we line bore the block it will mostly cut the mains and just clean up the block. i have seen many blocks come in here that someone line honed and took way to much off the block and the block is unusable
