Default camera opinions. good beginner digital camera

Hey guys i have been thinking about getting into photography just for a little hobby, i have been checking out a few cameras and i am tryin to figure out what would be my best choice, i am in college with not alot of money so i need to get the best bang for the buck. one of my questions is should i spend the little extra for a low low end SLR or go with something like a powershot.

I went to best buy and checked out what they had and found the Canon Powershot S31S or 531s i cant read my writing lol i liked it cuz it was quick and seemed to have a good ammount of features to play with. although its hard to choose cuz i am limited to the tiny picture on the screen to see the quality it takes. and im not sure if the lenses are the type that are changable( sorry i dont know what im talking about)

I am looking to spend 300-600 600 at most if it really is worth it but the powershot seems to go for about 350 on some sites.

So quite obviously i am very new but i dont want a point and shoot i want to be able to learn but dont want to outgrow my camera in a year. Any opinions would be helpful.

If you are looking at the S3, you may like the camera I have... A Sony DSC-H2... they are VERY comparable...
But if you are willing to go as high as 600 bucks... find a USED DSLR and play with that.

Here are some pics I have taken with it...

d40 sucks imo, d50 would be the best bang for the buck, good features, great pics, expecially if youre trying to get into photography

well i went to best buy and played with the D50 and loved it.. i like the ability to take pictures so quickly and i know all the desirable features are there because of everyones recommendation, The guy at best buy told me i probably only need the d40 but seems like they are pretty much the same price on the net. so i might as well go with the d50.

thanks for all the help guys

yes d50 FTW! haha

get a 50mm lense if you're up for it. it's only a 120 brand new from ritz. but you could shop around for a cheaper price. i think bhphotovideo has a good deal on it.

there are several options on B&H... body only, 18-55 kit, 28-80 kit, blah, blah, blah
Just pay attention to which one you're looking at for which price.

B&H is a very reputable site... good prices and they ship super fast; allow returns too if need be.

Had the D50 for a while, good little camera that's great for a beginner.
I think the D40 would be a good cam to have too, but not 'till after the price drop.

This is what i have come up with

I am going with the D50 + 18-55mm lens= 549
and this lens soon after
55-200mm= 199-50= 149

does this sound good?
i am still learning but its hard to figure out all the little cost cutting things that will cost me quality that i dont want to go for. like lower quality glass in the lenses and such

that is unless i find a good used deal.
