Default Just rear or rear and front sway bars??

I'm going to get the suspension tech sway just can't decide if I should get both the front and rear...or just the rear.

I know with just the rear you will have better overall "nutural" handling. But i've also heard that when you get both of them your inital turn-in is sharper and you will also have reduced inside wheel spin, and of course less total body roll.

I'm doing this just to have a fun car to drive. I autocross mabye once every other month...just to have fun, not to be competitive. I'm riding on pro-kit with illuminas.

Do I get just the rear or both bars??

Thanks

First - stiffer front bar will increase wheel spin with open diff. You can test this by loosening the stock bar to see that spin has been reduced. If you are shooting for good balance, I would start with the rear bar and see how it performs - go from there...

I don't want to have to take my car to the limit to feel the sway bar. That's why I think the front and rear set up would be nice...so I could have fun with the sharper steering.

I'm kinda' stuck with a choice. I've got a guy who will sell me a used set for $175...but I haven't been able to get a hold of him, it's irritating because i would have easily paid $175 for them. This was making me think to forget him and just get a brand new rear bar for $120.

I don't know what to do.

paying for an aftermarket front bar is a waste of money. even if its $5 extra, its $5 wasted.

get a rear bar. keep your stock front bar.

Why would you say that? I personaly have the front and rear setp on my car and noticed a huge increase in performance. I am not clear on how it could not be a good buy when it is a bigger bar than stock?

LOL! Bigger is better huh? Do you know what changing sway-bar sizes actually does?

a big change in suspension feel does not mean you made it better.

go ahead and deflate your tires. see how that feels. a lot different, huh? must be better...

a 22mm solid front bar comon to most aftermarket swaybars is too big for a typical honda.

A sway bar couples the suspensions on each side to each other, *AND* relative
to the chassis. If you could put the car up on a lift and actually compress
the suspension on one side by hand, then a sway bar makes the compression of one
side also try to compress the suspension on the other.

so with that being said, it only goes so far to have a bigger front bar because A big front bar stabilizes the body roll more but also creates a lot more understeer.

But if you do your homework and some research you can have a fairly balanced setup. even with a bigger front sway bar.

So i guess in answer to your question, yes i know what a sway bar does, and in this case, bigger is not always better.

Just makin sure. I personally would not mess with front bars at all (unless you don't have one). Rear bars are cheaper, easier to change, and have the same overall effect on performance.

for the record, i do use a 19mm (over the standard 18mm) front swaybar from a civic sedan, with a 22mm rear mugen sway bar. i bumped up the front because I am on stock springs.

i cannot imagine needing a 22mm front bar.

yeah, i have the suspension techniques front and rear. I installed them at the same time as my koni yellows, sportlines, and sway bars. I thought is was great. not sure how the general effect of the front was. But combined with all the other mods i did at the same time... I thought it was great. Also it has taken alot of tuning with the adjustibility of the shocks ( i know that is not the Fix-All for suspension woes) and i have it to a point where i like it.

Just get some polyurethane bushings for the front swaybar and you'll be pretty well balanced. Thats what I have in my EJ1 and the handling is pretty neutral with some oversteer/understeer depending on how you act in a turn.

I'm planning to install a 24mm front / 22-23mm rear bar on my eg that is currently running 12k/10k springs. The handling is pretty neutral as it is but with a slight understeer/oversteer depending on the the turn. I'm also worried that the front bar might be too much but we'll see after I get the rear sway/brace.

I just bought a new suspension techniques 19mm rear sway. Then I'll just get some poly bushing for the stock front bar and call it good.

Thanks for all of the advice guys. I think i'm going to be happy with this set up.

What if your civic already comes with a big 22mm front bar. Should I remove it then since it seems like you guys are saying that it is way too big.

I have a '94 Cx, which I don't think comes with the front sway bar. Should I install a front sway bar from a '94 Si that I have laying around? The car already has a rear itr swaybar.

seems like some people in the thread are alittle confused, tyson and 94eg i don't think are but here it goes.

you can't look at the size of a sway bar and compare them front to back. A lot of things go into the sway bars stiffness.

Its just like a spring really; the length, diameter both play a roll in stiffness.

so when comparing front and rear bars front to back it is rather useless to try and use there OD only.

(this can even be said for rear bars, as i have seen a rear sway bar for the same car be different lengths thus effecting the stiffness)

Some pics of the new bar

I got about 2" of snow this morning so I couldn't play around with it. But as soon as it clears up, i'm going to thow it at some corners and see how it feels.

Thanks again for the advice all.
