From talking to people and doing a little research, the b17 and the b16 do have different comp. ratios. I was told by a few people that they had the same.

b16a 10.2-.4
(depends on which one, usdm or jdm)
b16b 10.8

b17a 9.7

are these numbers way off or is this correct

The B17 is crap it came in the 2nd gen GSR its a 170 hp piece. If you think about getting one dont not worth it. Go with the B18 GSR or B16.

 

well, i'm asking the question cause, i bought a 92 civic si with a swapped b16 motor with a b17 head..
I think the dude who had it before me had it turbod. There are a few things that kidna give it away..

and from doing some reasearch, i've heard that the b17 has a lower compression ratio, and that, lower compression ratio cars are better for boosting. as compared to like a type-r or anything other car with high comp ratios...

i just wanna know if i'm making sense, or have it all wrong.

Why is the b17a a peice of crap? It has a 9.5 CR Im pretty sure. It has more torque then a b16a. I would think it would handle boost quite well also due to the lower compressior ratio plus a good r/s ratio. The tranny that also came with the b17 is also geared very agressively and is sought after by many people. I dont see how a b16a is better.

And for the head question it is a PR3 head just like the first gen b16a, it differs from the second gen in the cams. I think second gen cams are more agressive for NA apps. HTH

 

a b17a is a really good motor casue the r/s ratio is 1.62 and it makes more tourqe than a b16a but less then a b18c but the b18c has a r/s ratio of 1.58 so all in all i think it is a happy medium between the two motors b16a and b18c cause it has a better r/s than a b18c and makes more tourqe than a b16a
oh yeha a perfect r/s ratio is 1.75 and lets here it for the b16a coming in at a almost perfect 1.74

 

it's not a piece...as for the head, the 1st gen b16a head and the b17a head are the same but the b17 got the 2nd gen b16a cams (more agressive than the 1st gen).

 

B17A facts:

head is same as 1st gen B16 (already said)
Bore is same as all other b-blocks (except B20B/Z)
cams are the same as 1st gen B16
stroke is slightly longer than B16, hence more torque
has flatter dome than B16 pistons, hence lower compression...

isn't PR3 just a cast # in some senses, and there are other honda engines with PR3 casted heads, but different internals, like the ITR, doesn't it have a PR3 casted head? I know the heads are different internally and as an ITR with slight port and polish job etc, but ive heard thats just a cast # and you can't always go by the cast # as to what the head is, kinda like cam gears...lots of PR3 casted cam gears, in different engines. correct me if im wrong, but just a comment

 

Any reasons why the B18C1 is a better block than the B17? Either way it would get sleeved and rebuilt for turbo... I'm looking around for a short block to put a B16 head on... I'm skeptical to go with an ls/vtec and thought a B17 might be a better block to use.

 

b18c1 is better because its a 1.8l not a 1.7l with more torque
