approx how much does it cost for a machine shop to fit aftermarket rods?
i was wondering becuase when people are talking about bulding up the motor with rods and pistons and say rods are only an extra $300 you also have to remember that you need bearing and lots of machine work right? so what does it really cost to get the rods fit for the new bearings and/or the cranks journals machined? i could see this getting really expensive?
There are no extra costs above the cost of the rods. They take the same bearings as stock rods (although the size may vary slightly).
yeah but there are certain clerences right? i mean you need to have so much tolerance between the bearing and the journal. i cant remember for a honda but its like 15/1000" right. and then you need to look at that chart for the colors of bearings and everything so im just wondering what it will all cost to build the bottom end?
You still need to do that with stock rods. The cost people are talking about is the price difference between stock rods and aftermarket rods (usually Eagle rods).
not it you leave the rods stock and just go with pistons and dont boost over 10 or something. so what would it all cost to get the aftermarket rods machined and bearings selected?
OK I will say it again "there is NO additional machining to use aftermarket rods" except in a D engine which will need some block notching or if your using stock pitons. If your boosting than you should be using a low compression forged piston anyway. As far as bearings go plastigage is only a few dollars and a few minutes to check your clearance. Most people start with green bearings.
oh ok, so if there is no machining, then you need to go through alot of bearings to select the ones the right size? so its just a matter of trial and error using plastigauge? what about using ACL bearings? do they go up in a size of 3/1000 like honda bearings? just wondering because the only reason i didnt get rods or pistons this year was all the extra time and money it was going to take to get all the machine work done. that said now im kind of changing my mind and maybe going to contact and new machine shop.
