Hello,

I've been bored and thinking of what it would take to fab up a titanium exhaust, obviosly this is going to be expensive (how expensive i dont rly know).... I've done a few quick searchs but cant find any company's that sell U bend titanium pipes, does anyone know of anything avalible without having to buy a ton of it. Also does anyone know where titanium filler rod would be avalible??

Has anyone hand fab'd a titanium exhaust for their car... or welded anything titanium??


This is probibly just a pipe dream that wont even amount to me doing anything but I am still interested in seeing what ppl have to say.

 

tigdepot.com sells titanium rod.

I've welded titanium once, and its not really all that difficult...just very sensitive to contamination and it welds a little different.

I'd call burns stainless, they'd at least know where to get piping.

 

There is a guy on ebay selling titanium tubing in various diameters. I have never found mandrel bent titanium though. I think that's why alot of the jap racecars have the titanium pie cut all the time. The stuff really doesn't bend well, so I believe the process to do so is complicated and expensive.

 

yea thats kinda what i figured.... it would be aloooot of work but it would be pritty damn cool!!! What type of blade would i need to use in order to cut titanium though?? and also i doubt i'd be able to get any flanges made in titanium so i would probibly have to try and weld titanium to stainless, or get some solid stock of titanium (expesnive!!) and get it machined as to work with a v-band clamp... or can anyone think of an easier way of doing it???

 

actualy from what i know Ti doesnt work to well when exposed to alot of heat, maybe the exhaust itself wont see temps high enough for it but maybe the fluctuation of high heat then cool(not driving) will do something also

 

why not just use AL..

Ti is pointless

 

Tit filler and material is spendy so you need to have some cash.

It would look cool but I see alot of other better options.

Funny, they have been making titanium exhausts for years. They have titanium internal engine components. The melting point of titanium is just over 1800 degrees celcius. If titanium is good enough for the aerospace industry to use exhaust applications, then I think it's capable.

Aluminum is controversial as an exhaust system material. Some drag cars have been using it and alot of people equated that to it being fine for daily driven use. I have heard of some guys running full aluminum systems. How they held up and continue to hold up...I don't know.

 

I looked around online trying to find suppliers.. i think the hard part will be the flanges, the plate needed is pretty expensive.. and its an expensive process to use a stainless flange.

I'm pretty positive anyone with a mandrel bender could bend it so you dont have to do pie cuts.. although that looks so amazing..

and then as you probaly know you might want to get a welding chamber for ti.. but its not 100% necesary.

 

I know titanium isnt rly the greatest option but I think it would be cool to do just because no one rly ever does it. I've herd a couple cars with titanium exhausts and they sounded amazing.

Its realy not practical though because i would be pritty hard pressed to find a resinator or anything along those lines to run with it and titanium mufflers are expensive.

 

We've bent AMS4941 (Ti CP2 Welded) and AMS4942 (Ti CP2 Seamless). It's not a fun material to bend at all. It only bent well in on our most expensive bender (&gt;$250k) and you have to develop pressure assist profiles to bend it without slipping the clamps. It's far from a material that just any idiot with a mandrel bender can bend.

This is what I have heard, hence probably not true...

 

We find Ti welds just fine and is highly durable as an exhaust material. It also makes cool white sparks when it scrapes the ground

 

Aluminum is a controversial material for exhausts, but at least if it breaks it is easy enough to make a new exhaust. Aluminum will last for years if it is only used on the cooler part of the exhaust, and as long as the welds are decent and clamps are used to hang it instead of welding hangers to the pipe.

you are right, that is proper practice but that doesn't mean everyone does it.

 

titanium DOES NOT have to be welded in a purged room it can be welded in a regular area just like anything else. it WILL be hard to bend as titanium is very flexible as it. the comment above about the heat is crazy b.c its melting point is 3135 F. in reality and theory it should make a good exhaust...jets, racing motorcycles and other such objects do use titanium exhausts. as for welding it. my opinon it welds just like stainless except if you touch your rod in a warm area of the metal it will stick...it feels almost as if the rod is like magnetic (its not). some say its hard to weld b.c of that but thats all your own opinon

 

You really need to weld it in an inert chamber. You need read Carrol Smith's Engineering to Win. He has a small part in the book regarding titanium for exhaust systems.

maybe it does help but from my experience ill tell you right now i have welded titanium just plates and exhausts and such and have had them get x-rayed and all were good.
