Whats sup guys i dont have access to a spring compressor but wanted to put my coilovers on this weekend anyway. Whats the best way to remove my stock springs off my stock shocks with out using a spring compressor. Any help is appreciated
loosen em up while the car is on the ground, tie a belt around the springs so they dont fly out from under the fender, and slowly jack the car up, and watch the springs come off the dampner.
or just tie a belt around the spring when shock is out, and aim the **** away while loosening. the belt (if its strong) should absorb some shock.

put ur foot on the spring and undo the nut slowly, making sure that both sides of the strut assembly are not facing anything that it could damage or bounce off of. Wear gloves and hope for the best.

Then buy a set off the internet for less than $20, and save yourself a hospital visit.

Take your coil spring assembly off your car take them to a local shop. They should be able to switch out your springs for you. For a small fee of course. I would rather pay someone who had the right equipment to do it right instead of paying for a emergency room visit because i was being stupid.

lol, ive done over 10 sets of suspensions, and every time i just put an old tire on the shock body, and impacted the nut off. its really not as dangerous as people make it out to be. the first time i did it i was scared, but it wasnt even all that much of a pop. ill admit though, if you did get hit by the shock body while it uncompresses, it would hurt. but thats what the tire is for
back in highschool everyone used to ask me to install their ghetto springs on stock shocks. since i was a nice guy i would usually do it for them. never got any money, but did get a free pair of nikes once

you guys need to do it old school style like we did in 92-93 haha.
Put the shock assy between 2 tires. Cover the spring/shock with a towel or something and a carboard on top. Step on top of the cardboard/shock assy, and expose only the top part where the nut is. Slowly loosen the nut and BAMMM!! it will loosen up and hopefully it wont fly everywhere. hehe.
Actually this is the last resort, I wouldnt recommend doing this but not to say its not a popular way of doing it without a spring compressor. This is how alot of people used to do it back then and possibly even now.

you guys are ******* insane do you have any idea how much damage that can do if something goes wrong?
rent a compressor (free from most car parts places with a 100% refundable deposit) or take it to a shop and have them swap the springs. dont be stupid and risk your safety to save a buck

you guys both just earned the ***** of the year award! you guys both have obviously never done it, exospeedAMcrx and Heylookits shawn know whats up i got your backs. the towel thing thats what i do but i take two towel wrap the shock like a burrito only exposing enough of the nut to remove it, it pops off and all stays in the towel, we do it with a wall behind the shock just incase though...

I haven't had a problem with letting Honda springs pop off, I just spin them off with an impact wrench. Don't try it with a BMW 7-series though, the spring bounced off of my thigh and went through the ceiling of the garage, landing in the attic. It hurt for a while and most of my thigh turned black for a week or so. On second thought, drop $20 and get a spring compressor. Just get the kind with the u-bolts, not the kind with the open hooks.
for civic yes it dosent matter bmw7 is a heavier car with a stiffer spring it makes sense that it launced i would not try this on a bigger car with stiff springs only light cars like civics integras etc...

dude, you don't specifcally need a autozone. any parts store will do.

If you have access to a impact gun, and even if you don't, what I do is point the shock toward a wall, loosen that nut with the impact, yes the spring will uncoil but nothing will fly. Its not a big deal I do it on almost a daily basis.
