Default Searched - Transmission Rebuild

I was wondering who you guys that have had trannys rebuilt sent your transmission to.

I am thinking about sending it to King Motorsports. Anyone had a transmission service by them?

I am sending it in for a 5th gear synchro / shift forks / general inspection.

Are you doing more than the 5th gear synchro and fork? If not, why not do it yourself? Do you have any tools? Mechanically inclined?

do it yourself if possible, its a good learning experience and not too difficult once you familiarize yourself with all the parts. I successfully completed a rebuild myself and had never even opened/dropped a tranny before. get a helms though as you will need it.

I have built motors, made power, but one thing I do not want to mess with is transmissions. My tools are also currently scattered between the two houses and dont have time right now to get everything.

At a local shop, I helped tear into one and got lost. I dont really wanna deal with that again and have to pay someone for my mistakes.

I was going to have King use their carbon coated synchros in the rebuild.

Thing is also, I am not 100% sure what is wrong. Whether it be just a 5th gear synchro or shift for, or both.

I didnt want to touch my tranny either, I was scared I would ruin something. But since I didnt have the money to shell out, and have friends with proper tools (vise, bearing pullers and splitters, guages, etc) I decided to give it a shot. Also youll be able to see if the synchros are messed up just by pulling off the case without disassembling anything major. just have a nice clean workspace and try not to lose anything. its cake.

**be careful if you decide to take it apart, as the whole gearing assembly needs to come out as one, and I made the mistake of trying to lift by the big *** bearing on top of the mainshaft, and it came right off and went flying across the room some of the parts on the mainshaft arent pressed on and slide on and off rather easily.

iirc, gearspeed does tranny rebuilds and in record time.....

you should also consider what upgrades you want to make internally as they may be easier to do now than later.

also consider buying a mildly used jdm tranny or even a new usdm tranny - for the $ spent if you aren't doing the work yourself.....

But then I can be right back into the same place as before..

As far as performance goes, the car wont see anything more than better bolt on's and some head stuff down the road.

I think with the carbon coated synchro's and the basic service I will be good in that sector.

Getting an ACT HD PP/Street disc and Toda Flywheel to compliment the new tranny.
