Default Glowing cat after H22 swap

Hello,

I am having some problems with my H22 swap... It backfires and the cat gets red hot. The shield isnt red, just the piping. Is it supposed to do that?

We checked the cam timing 3 times, the first 2 times we used the arrows to line them. Then we used the marks on the sprockets to line up with the block. Now the engine runs much smoother but still backfires a little. I need to re check the ignition timing now that we adjusted the T-belt again, but we only adjusted the intake cam so the timing should be good still I think.

I searched and read that bad injectors or an exhaust leak can cause this?

I do have a TPS sensor cel that I have to sort out...I've tried but cant get any Voltage reading on a meter and help on that would be great too. I've tried getting it from the harness at the ecu, backprobing the sensor while it pluged in, taking the plug off the JDM harness and plugging it in and checking the exposed wires I stripped. No reading at all. I'm using the helms info to check it, Green is (_) and yellow is (+) IIRC....can this cause backfiring?

sounds like your running super rich and the cat is burning up all that extra fuel. Check your ignition timming like you said.

fix the tps and see if it still does it. you might have a very clogged cat.

take the cat off and shine a light through it. If you cant see the light through the other end, theres your answer.

but the cat was fine with the H23?

Is it possible that running it with the intake cam off caused the gas to clog it up?

I'll check it...

Could you tell me more on how the tps is a bitch

if something was wrong with your engine and causing the cat to glow...dont you think the header would be glowing as well?

the only reason why its slightly a bitch is because humans have backs...that do not feel good when reaching across your engine to unscrew torx bolts, stick a volt meter on the tps wires, carefully move it till it reads .45-.55 volts, and then tightening it back on without messing up the adjustment

I've put the voltmeter on the tps wires but I get no reading?

The key must be to the "on" position where the lights on the dash are lit up right?

Heres what I've tried so far

-taking the tps plug off and trying to get the VM probes in the tps' (-) and (+)...didin't work, since I cant see due to angle.

-tried "back probing"..didn't work

- tried taking the D plug off ecu and probing D11 and D22 I think the probe didn't fit, so I made 2 jumper wires that I stuffed in the plug and tried to get a reading of those, nothing.

- took tps plug off JDM wiring harness and stripped ends of wires and pluged the plug to tps, no reading either?

The car doesn't have to be running right?

I did some more searching and came up with backprobing also requires paperclips in the back of the plug...I'll try this too

wtf is going on here....backprobing?

stick your VM probes into the damn wires, everything has to be plugged in for this to work....

There is only one way to line up the timing stuff, follow the helms method....

Check your cat....like blake said...

put to red end to the signal wire and the black one to a ground.

should read ~.5v at 0% and ~4.5v at 100%

what do you mean just plug it in the damn wires?

expose part of the wire or jam it in where the wire goes into the plug inside the black grommet?

thanks B.Rabbit

u push the tip of the red one into the female pin of the signal wire. That will give you an open in the wire where you get readings.

really I'm not trying to sound like a retard but are you telling me to leave the plug on the tps and then push the positive probe into the back of the plug where the wires lead from the wiring harness

sorry for my ignorance...there is alot of conflicting info on the net for doing this

put it this way, how are you going to measure the voltage (whether is reading correctly) without it connected?

first get the voltage with your foot off the pedal, then voltage with it to the floor.

black end somewhere on the chassis (ground) and the red end into the back of the plug.
