Default 13" steelie weight

Hey guys,

I've got a 93 civic DX hatch with the 13" steelies and 175/70R13 tires. Anyone know what the rims weight so I can get an idea of how much they weight with tires.

I'm looking at buying some 15" Konig Heliums and Toyo Proxes 4 and would like to stay somewhat close to stock weight for gas mileage, etc.

The weight or mass-moment of inertia of the rim/tire will no affect gas mileage in any noticeable sense. If you really want to know how much they weigh with the tires on just take one off and put it on a scale and find out.

Yeah you might if your lucky get 1 mile more to the gallon in the city if that. Only if theres a large difference in weight though. Wheels aren't usually something people change for gas mileage.

cool thanks guys. I know a few pounds would not affect anything, but 17" wheels (rims/tires) would weight about 36-37lbs, where as 15" wheels would weight about 27lbs. If the stock 13" wheels weight 22lbs I was wondering if the 15lbs difference per corner would affect gas mileage or acceleration in any significant sense.

I think your numbers are way off.

For example, GS-R 15" wheels weigh around 16 pounds each and the Kumho SPT in 195/55-15 weighs 19 pounds each, for a total of 35 pounds per wheel/tire.

For another example, the Sumitomo HTR 200 tire in 175/70-13 weighs 15 pounds, according to the Tire Rack, which means by your figures that the 13-inch wheels would need to weigh only 7 pounds each.

I'm talking the rims + tire. Sorry ya 13" was an error. Not 15lbs per corner, 10lbs per corner if I got with 17's

17" konig helium 16lbs
205/40ZR17 Toyo Proxes 4 20lbs
36lbs

13" steelies guessing 13lbs
13" tires guessing 14lbs
27lbs

15" Konig Heliums 11lbs
195/50ZR15 Toyo T1-r 17lbs
28lbs

See above and you'll find that 13" tires are 15 pounds. I doubt that 13" steelies weigh as little as 13 pounds, too - probably more like 15 or so. So in comparing 13" steel wheels/tires against 15" lightweight alloy wheels/tires, the 13" may actually be heavier. What your numbers are really showing is just that the 17" are heavier than either one, and that's where the big difference is (so don't get 17")...

You could just drive around with half a tank of gas all the time. Having 10 gallons less would save you a whole 65lbs or so.............

If your only goal is to improve gas mileage there are numerous threads out there covering much much better ways to do it.
