I had been meaning to do this for awhile now, but the wheel gap at the rear of the car was alittle more than what I would have liked.
So, luckily having coilovers I wound down the suspension about 1/2-3/4" at the rear.
After letting the suspension settle for a few miles, I went and drove some of the more spirited roads in the area.
Now this maybe all psychological, but the handling seemed so much better. The turn in was greatly increased, and just the overall poise of the car into-mid-exit of the corner felt so much better.
So my question is, could lowering the rear of the car that little have that great of an affect? If so, why?
If this helps, I can not squeeze a finger between the front wheel and the fender, previously I could squeeze one and a half fingers in the rear, now only 1/2 a finger in the rear. I know thats not very scientific but ohwell.

There are many variables that can either ruin or improve handling on any car.
It's hard to guage what you did to yours, and, how it improved the handling (seat of the pants) on your car.
But if it works for you, then stick with it.

All I did was lower the rear of the car about 1/2--3/4". Maybe it just made the toe a little different.
