what is a good range of degrees before bottom dead center that most honda cams open?
if you have any specifics on a certain cam, please post it and the manufacturer.
im looking for any honda cam for any series motor, aftermoarket or stock.

why does lift come into anything for the cam opening xx degrees before bdc? im just looking for the instant that it begins to open.
if it does matter, then:
what is more common lift?
and im looking for the vtec opening thanks for bringing that up.

Common number are .040 JDM .050 USDM. If you are looking for "seat to seat" just use the advertised duration, and figure it out from the lobe center. 310 EX. duration @ 110 ctr line = 85 degree opening.

easier to pick a number like .050" than it is to figure out the instant the valve actually leaves the seat

gotcha, just tolerances.
ok then how do you know the lobe center w/out measuring?
and how you got 85* opening bbdc from 310 dur, and 110 lobe centers by:
[ center line degrees - ((360 - dur.) / 2) ] correct?

I know the lobe center because Crane, Crower, Skunk, Rocket, Elgin, Comp Cams, Isky, Web all publish it for their cams. You might want to read some of there catalogs or web site's on the "how to" stuff. Elgin, Web and Skunk have good "how to" pages for Imports.
Lobe center means half of your duration occurs before this point and half ocurrs after this point. So the calculation for opening of 85 BBDC for 310 duration at 110 lobe center can be computed as follows.
110 + (310/2) = 110 + 155 = 265 degrees before TDC
= 265 - 180 degrees = 85 degrees BBDC. (in words 265 degrees before TDC is 85 degrees before BDC, BDC by definition is 180 degrees from TDC.)
Lackey math at it's finest.

things to do before i die
1. get *** kicked by bruce lee
2. wreck my crx in the "corkscrew" at laguna seca
at least i know one of them may happen at crxpo 2007. both can not on the same day. not because bruce is dead, but because my head would explode from sheer amazement.

One of my favorite movies.
The thing you missed is that Bruce was still teaching in that lesson. If you asked me if you're supposed to lead with your heel during a side kick and I answered you with, "there's a better way...ask someone else" I'd be a pretty poor martial arts instructor. I'd tell you to lead with your hip so you'd at least have a point of reference for gaining a better understanding of the technique. I wouldn't expect any layperson to understand things the way I do. But that's just the teaching technique I've been successfully using for ten years.
