mask off everything you dont want, use 1 1/2 inch green tape for starters ion where you want and then tape paper to the already applied tape and mask off everything you dont wan black on  Gl
this is cake... take the bumper off and there is a ridge where the grill starts... mask so it is not on the grill and make sure some parts of the tape isnt lifted or not having the full bumper covered. then apply light coats about 7-8 inches away and spray left and right.. id suggest using semi flat black or the bumper coating either way it is the same outcome. then spray from left to right by a foot at a time. goodluck
I've been wanting to do this as well and have been searching threads. I can't find the exact thread i read this from but you can just strip the paint off of it with some spray. Search "paint grill" or something.
when I painted my upper grille due to fading on my 99ej6, I:
1) Made sure it was clean (use a dirt/grease remover, lots of these at shops everywhere),
2) Masked off EVERYTHING I didnt want to be painted on/damaged,
2) Lightly sanded with a really high grit sand paper a couple times to make a good smooth surface,
3) Made sure it was clean again (use the dirt/grease remover or whatever again),
4) Did lots of light coats, roughly 7-8 I think..
I used Krylon Satin Black (directions for painting are always on the can), came out very close to OEM
good luck
