Your block off plate is probably causing a huge vacuum leak.

Without knowing the code, we're just shooting in the dark. You know how to check the codes?

If you're OBD-0 with the pm6, the red LED on the ECU should blink the code.

It just stays on solid?

about the overheating:
is your thermostat opening? (does the lower radiator hose get hot)
is your radiator fan coming on?

If it's chipped, it could just be a bad chip, and not a bad ECU.

You know from experience?

I've burned bad chips for my ECU before, and it would still start up fine, althought I never attempted to drive it like that. It would just throw a solid check engine light.

Like I said before, a solid CEL can happen with a bad chip and it will stay SOLID. It won't blink a code.

Don't try to sell him a p06. He's OBD-0.
