Default R will not stay running

ok I've put 8 new spark plugs in in the last two days. But apparently thats not the real issue...might been why it was running poorly for the past week, but now its not the issue! There is a greater evil haha

The R will fire up....after a bit of pumping the gas and turning over, but will only run for a bit. If I accerlate it sputters and loses power like its going into limp mode and then usually will shut off. I had to start it 4 times while driving just now to make it 1 mile to my house...I happened to be playing with the plugs and gapping them to see if that was the issue and then driving around the block.

Then it just cut out while I was driving. I would say it might be the fuel pump, but I can hear it priming...fuel filter? car sat for 6 months and the fuel filter was kinda open for about a week before I got it running...but seriously a fuel filter wouldnt keep it frmo running.

At this point I am thinking its gota be the plug wires (unlikely in my opinion) or the dizzy....very likely considering I've had this issue before with dizzys

any thoughts guys?

And can anyone in MD with a ITR meet up this weekend to let me put on their dizzy real fast and see how it run?

didn't you get tuned recently, or was it someone else?

wash the engine bay recently?

i'd check the normal stuff: fuel, air, spark, timing... if you need help with each one of these then just let us know... it's pretty straightforward stuff for the most part.

Check to make sure the MAP sensor is connected properly.

x2 and the alternator... the reason why i say that is because i had the same exact problem... I checked the map sensors first... it ended up being my alternator.

didn't wash the engine bay at all. the map sensor was the first thing I checked....theres a vaccum line to it and it all hooked up.

Spark plugs are bran new so that can't be it anymore. But the way it keeps dieing, sometimes lasting longer than others kinda sounds like its a spark or a fuel issue. It was just tuned at Jeffs, so timing shouldn't be the issue either.

I am going to check the alternator, make sure the belt is tight, but even it the alternator was dead the car would keep running until the battery died, and the battery is 1 week old. might be the ignition or the cap/rotor?

yup. my battery was only a month old. your battery will probably die in a day or so if it is the alternator. gl

PROBLEM FIXED

When I rebuild the head, I got a dizzy off another engine...don't ask me what, but you guys who know how to swap things from one car to another know what i mean and had to cut into the wires, re-pin and solder the wires....I didn't use flux solder, and apparently also did a shitty job soldering.

Anyway, took the dizzy off, redid the wiring and all is well now except for the fact that the timing is off now compared to what Jeff tuned it at. I put it about the same angle it was, but there is still a bit of back fire. But the car redlines fine now. I am leaving it alone until I get the timing right again before I blow somethign else up hahaha

haha thanks man. I'm actually learning like soo much which is awesome because now when something goes wrong I actually have a very good idea as to whats wrong. Once you build your first engine its like everything makes perfect sense.

i had the same problem. i checked the dizzy, altenator, battery, everything that can be a factor in that problem. turns out my main ground wire was very loose, got it tightened back up and it was good to go.

what pisses me off is that i paid $100 for a tow to sportcar motion in vista when i couldve fixed it myself.

you might wanna see if thats the problem if you hadnt fixed it yet.
