98 gsr.. pissed off.. need advice.
bought a 98 gsr back in the late summer. took it to a mechanic to get my timing belt/water pump changed. mechanic notices that the code on my head says it's a 96... checks the block code, begins with a 1 (probably 96 too?) Also says that there were alot of missing bolts and that the wheel studs were after market.
I bought this car for 8k (too much, even if it was clean, but wouldn't be so bad of a rip off if it was)
so needless to say, I'm pretty ******* pissed. I'm just not sure what to do about it though, that's why I'm posting here.
Anyone know if there's any sort of law against this that I could use to my advantage or anything like that? Any suggestions?
I know I was dumb for buying it in the first place, but I didn't know enough to check the codes on the head and block or anything like that.
PS. I still have the guy's address and phone number if that helps

he didn't specifically say "This engine is not swapped" but he did say that the car was all stock except for the lowering springs.

your f*ked.. ima noob lawyer.. if the car is sold as is reguardless of what he told you.. you are responsible for it.. you bought the used car knowingly from a private seller and not a lot so you purchase a car in the condition it is in.. which is why they make things such as carfax and other services to which you can check a cars history on the buyers expense unless provided otherwise.. should have ran the vins for both the car and the block before you bought it..
doesnt matter if he tells you that the car is blue when it is really black.. once you sign the title from a private seller ITS YOURS..

I ran a carfax, everything came up clean. should have checked the vin on the motor, but I didn't know enough to do so (and I hear it's not too hard to move the vin over from the old motor anyway?)

So it's an older engine, but the same thing, whats the big deal?
Other then there being problems since it's cali, there really is no Huge difference.

for not running the motor vin.. you might as well run it now..

the big deal is that I paid for a 98 engine with 96k miles, not a 96 swapped engine with god knows how many miles on it and god only knows how badly its been beaten on

Just above the exhaust ports there will be circles with numbers in them. Your mechanic says that it has a 9 and a 6.
It doesn't mean that it is from a 96 teg. It could also be from a 97.

I've never actually lol'ed before at a post, so that was a first for me...
Damn dude, sry about your car. Reminds me of when i bought mine. I was in the same situation as you. Too noobish to do research and give a full inspection. I found out a while later that my engine was a factory replacement and also found nitrous lines hidden under the carpet
. We all have to learn our lessons somehow. Hope the car works out for you though.

i just bought a 98 RS from NJ, and it has 200k on it and runs mint. only sketchy thing about when i bought it was that the ecu had a obd2a to obd1 harness and a obd1 LS ecu in it? I have no idea why though. i knew this when i bought the car though
runs alright, still pulls pretty hard. it does burn some oil, but mainly in vtec I think. haven't tried driving for a while without hitting vtec (hard to do xD) I have yet to do a compression test on it, but will probably do it soon. I guess the motor would be more tweakable now since it's OBD1, maybe if the compression comes out good I can pretend I didn't pay so much for it and then boost the **** out of it?
also, should I kick the guy's *** for telling me it was stock?
