Hello folks,

My family has a 1998 Honda Accord LX Sedan. Don't get wrong, I love this car. Its roomy and has a nice strong 4cyl engine.

From day one off the lot, this thing has been giving us on and off. The biggest crap about this car is the electronics, the backlight for the clock sometimes comes on and off (now off always), and the car dies on us every once in a while.

The problem that we have is that this car from time to time, usually very constant now since its colder...It friggin dies on us. The car when we are driving or backing up, it would just shut off or either if we are driving, the SPEEDOMETER would slowly go to 0. There would be no power, you press the gas and nothing happens. We would have to restart the car and then we can go.

I've checked around on google for possible causes. Ive noticed that this model year seems to have lots of electrical problems, and this issue being one of them. Similar people who have the dieing randomly problem have went to Honda dealer and nothing was found or done.

My dad and I were thinking of 3 things according to our research. But my dad is confident its another thing.

1. Ignitor (is this the right name? My dad said something inside the steering console is always loose. He said it makes the thing grab the key tighter so it wont die, since the key part always seems to be loose)

2. Starter

3. Dizzy (although this was replaced a year ago, not even reaching 100K)

I was wondering if someone(s) can help diagnose the problem and suggest certain parts we should look for in replacing.

Edit: I found the correct item. It is called the "Ignition Starter Switch" My dad thinks its that since he fiddled around with it for a while now.

ignition switch recall was issued for that car for the exact reasons you have outlined. Honda bulletin # 02-031

 

OMG!! WTF. I didn't know this. This car was purchased new at the dealer too.

Man oh man, Honda is trying to screw its customers. We never ever received any recall notice.

I am going to check this up on the Transport Canada website.

If we go back now, they should still warrant replacement still correct?
