Default shorter final drive, yes or no?

hello pp!!!some help needed here!
let us suppose we have 2 identical euro spec b16a2 civics with 4.266 final drives.they accelerate side by side because they are the same...now let us soppose the one of the two changes the final drive with a 4.4 one....will the one with the 4.4 be in front of the other or the fact that the one with the 4.266 will stay longer on the lower gears which accelarate better will be able to catch up with the one with the 4.4?

PM user Bense.

When it comes to Honda Trannies...it really gets no better than him as far as Honda-Tech goes. Be forewarned, for the correct answer..he WILL charge you one beer shipped to his house packed in dry ice.

yes the 4.4 final drive car would be faster light to light. would go through the gears faster.

haha no, I was just kidding around. He is very knowledgable though and should certainly have the answers to both of your questions.

in general:

the higher the number:
good acceleration
lowered top speed

the lower the number:
slower acceleration
greater top speed

yes that general rule is known to me..
I dont know if my first post seemed like I had no idea but I am familiar with the gear and final drive numbers..I ve done a lot of research but I do not know a few stuff yet...I am hasitating because I ve seen cars with very long final drives like the euro ef9 gearbox with 4,133 bieng fast because they are a lot time in the first three gears and i ve also seen cars with short final drives like the integra 4.7 bieng fast.

the S1 tranny , came in the JDM X-Si on a B16A had a 4.4 final drive. the Y1 tranny , came in JDM SiR , had 4.26. and thats not the only difference , the only gear they share a ratio with is reverse , lol , other than that 1st through 5th is different in an S1 vs. a Y1. yes the S4C is also 4.4. every B16 and the B17 for that matter offered in US was 4.4.

Final drive is not the only component that's responsible for acceleration. Each of the 5 gears can vary in size, or "height."

yes I know that also!the lunguage does not allow me to explain myself 100% correctly...by my example I tried to say that I have seen 2 different sides of the subject...an ef with the 4.133 final drive which have longer or almost the same gear ratios with my 4.266 eg was faster than me because when I shifted to 3rd he was still accelarating with 2nd
an eg with an integra 4,78 gearbox has almost the same and maybe a little shorter gear ratios was faster than me again...
but those cars were different amongst them and that is why a set such an example in my first post.

Basically what it comes down to is: You'd be surprised.

Longer isn't better (low numbers). You just won't have the tq. to back it up. A car with a 4.4 will beat a car with a 4.2 FD (considering everything else is the same).

It's more of a top speed thing than anything else. Over a longer period race (maybe like 1 mile or something) it'll begin to pull ahead. Not in a 1/4 tho.

Wait until you get out of trial status then check out the FS forum.

That's probably your best bet, you can try other classifieds...
