Friend was following behind and saw black smoke out of my muffler!??!?!
hey guys.... earlier i went to meet up with some friends...and we decided to go to the mall and they had to follow....then a Civic Hatch was messing with me so we ran for a bit... then my friend told me that when my VTEC started to hit.... a cloud of black smoke came out.... but when i turned on my engine and left it in the parking lot and started to rev it up...i dont see any black smoke ...its perfectly clean... does that mean something is wrong? someone said something bout a Ring being burnt? please let me know guys...thanks...
my only mods are... intake, headers, msd spark system, and pulleys... the exhaust is 100% stock...

I believe its common to have some black smoke when getting into vtec. Your piston rings can be going bad, so that might be something to look into. Try doing a compression and/or leakdown test.
The reason why I think you might not see any smoke when your reving is because vtec will not activiate if its not under any load.

So are you running a stock ecu or a chipped one? Honda ecu rarely go bad so selling the ecu wouldnt change the engine from smoking. Have you ever changed the o2 sensor?
