Default Suggestions for a mild build?

Alright, for the past month, I've been looking through archives and such trying to decide what to do next with my R. I have come down to the conclusion that I would really like to refresh the car's motor with a mild build.

As of now, I have I/H/E, and the car currently has a 140,000 long miles on her. I know motor build and cheap shouldn't be in the same sentence, but Im not looking to make tons of power, just "refresh" it. I was thinking about setting a budget for $2000 or so and plan to keep a stock bottom end and concentrate on the head and a nice tune. Possibly find a used head package, etc.

I have really decided to do this since I just picked up a reliable daily driver and will have time to really get into this, and dont have to worry about downtime. I also think this would be a great learning experience as well.

So my question is, what are some suggestions? What have been some things that are proven and enjoyed by fellow R owners?

This is an example of the price range Im looking at. This is from a for sale ad by member OBEY_PROPAGANDA, and he is selling a jun head package.

Some questions....

Do you really need to rebuild the bottom yet? What are the leakdown/compression numbers?

What specific intake/header/exhaust do you have? Do you have engine mngt?

Do you plan to rebuild the block yourself? You mentioned "learning experience". Do you have the tools to do this?

no, i said i do not want to build up the bottom end, i would like it stock

will have leakdown and compression when i get home from school in 2 weeks

intake=j's racing, header=mugen 4-2-1, exhaust=JDM cat, b-pipe, spoon N1

no, i do not have engine management

i do have the tools to do so, but would most likely have it done and tuned professionally

im going to be doing a mild build as well soon...but im going to have to rebuild the block...

so i plan on doing this...

JDM ITR pistons .25 o/s
Mugen Headgasket

with those it should yield around a 11.5:1 without milling of the head

Comptech icebox
JDM ITR header
TIR testpipe
T1R 2.5 in b pipe
stock muffler

as far as head is concerned, im looking into that as well...im kind of afraid of aftermarket cams because knowing my luck they would break...

for tuning i plan on converting to obd1 with a p06 ecu and using like neptune or uberdata or whatever my friend can tune with...

anyone want to give any suggestions as well? hopefully you dont mind a bit of tread highjacking...

id def check the bottom end for leakdown and compression.

assuming it needs new pistons, id do b16 pistons, hone/new rings and call it a day

get a valve job on the head and some mild porting

cams that arent going to over cam you

obd2-1 conversion harness, crome and a competent tuner

keep it simple

When I rebuilt mine years ago, I just threw in JDM ITR pistons, and man, that felt great! If you want cheapish and relatively easy, that and maybe the thinner headgasket/mill the head a little.

Buddy Club Spec 3+ Cams on Hondata S200 would yeild some nice power gains with the right tuner. I feel that the Buddy Club Spec 4's are a little too aggressive for the street, with also needing upgraded valve train. The Spec 3's can be ran on stock valve train and would make a nice street motor

quick question

thin headgasket and flat valves usually yield how much increase in compression?

id still upgrade the springs...its not much, and better safe than sorry. bc4s arent unstreetable, but they are a bit much for a stock R motor. s200 is a waste of $$$ unless you like paying for something that you can get for free.

thin hgs are supposedly good for .4 and valves are supposedly good for .4 if done on both sides(i and e)

id mill the head rather than do a thin headgasket, i had no problem with my mugen but theres a bigger chance of it not sealing correctly.
