Default My First Downpipe (Pie Cuts)

Ok, I thought about it and I had decieded to go with a 3" pie cutted downpipe from 2 1/2". I know everyone says its overkill, but i think it shows some talent involved in creating it. Im 17 and I have some experince (4 Months(2-3 hrs/Day).

I have a Miller Synowave 180 Sd, Gas~ 20%, 3/32 red tungsten.

Lmk What you think! Also Ill Update As I Progress.

Not bad....it's mild steel which looks pretty shitty welded as is. The pie cuts are o.k., but they could definitely use some work. I think it hurts it a bit because the spacing from cut to cut varies...makes it look sloppy.

The good side is your only 17, by the time your 19 you'll be bangin stuff out with the best of'em, so your ahead of the game.

So for now, not bad, not great. The pics are blurred so its really hard to see your welds enough to have any input there. Keep workin man.

When I weld aluminized steel, I have several fans set up to move all that air out quickly. I weld, fog the place up, then jump outside after the fans are on. It goes w/o saying I strip the coating off the 1st 1" on either side, inside and out. Usually its just the normal gases, so its more of an irritant than a toxin.

I just wish I had a nice TIG.

Well, with a welding hood on and a somewhat open area it isn't going to kill you. It definitely makes you woozie though.... I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like *** the time I welded that crap.

Aluminized steel will not kill you. It's galvanized that can do that.

With all due respect to the welder, why do you people keep wasting time with pie cuts? You can buy a Donut with 360 degrees of bend. You can get any angle you need. It will cost a little more but it isn't worth the time required to make all of the pie cuts and then weld them back together.

I know what i couldve done, but if i have the time to make it, and make it look better than a mandrel bend...

Its a project of mine for my car and i will learn alot if i try something harder than a Mandrel bend...

you always want each face of the elbow to be a TRUE PERPENDICULAR cut. Each INNER joint needs to me the CHEATED cut at the same degree each time.

Not bad.
Props for getting in there and just trying it.
Any welding will kill you, wear a respirator/filtration device.

I felt a little woozy after doing some aluminized. Could someone suggest something I could wear that would make it safe? I figure just a mask like you would have a doctor wear isn't going to cut it.

Looks like those japanese tuning shops that did all of their stuff like this.

Are you just welding straight on galvanized, because you need to clean off that coat before you weld.

I don't have problems after i weld, but who knows, my lungs can take it...lol

I got a 3" stainless vband, one 3" stainless 180, 3 feet of 3" stainles for the downpipe and the 2.5" mild steel intercooler kit + 3ft 2.5" straight from race solutions. hopefully mine turns out as good as yours.. I might have three hours of welding experience.. and it was all aluminum.
