1994 Prelude VTEC, Towing Capacity?
Given a trailer hitch, how much could my Prelude tow? Is there anything I should do before towing things with the Prelude? I plan on doing a 60k maintenance routine over the winter, should I be adding anything else in while the car is apart?
Thanks.
Thanks.
You will know very quickly what kinda shape your clutch is in....
Just take it easy on the thing when taking off....its gonna kill your clutch if your payload is heavy
I don't really think anyone has good numbers on what the lude can actually tow though...

The clutch is being replaced actually, because it's having problems moving the car, much less a payload. Should I be looking at some manner of aftermarket clutch, as a kind of peace of mind type thing?
Looks like I'm going to be testing what the towing cap on the car is. I'm hoping to tow my Rx7 to the track once the season starts again.

Looking around, the capacity on the hitches I'm finding is 2000lbs. Blah.
I wonder if the limiting factor is the hitch itself or the frame of the car.

haha, what frame? I think that might be pushing it a little. you'd be towing as much weight as what you're pulling it with.

It's "streetable". It'll continue to be "streetable" for at least a season, so I'm not too pressed about towing it at the moment.
The main reason I want to be able to tow it is so that I can slap race rubber and brakes on it the day before, and not have to worry about things when I'm at the track. I'm not going to be competing during the upcoming season though, so I'm not going to have to worry about it until next year.
At the moment, I'm just wondering if I should be looking for another car as a tow vehicle (looks like that's what I should be doing) or not.

The RR/AC guys probably have the greatest understanding (on H-T) of towing and tow vehicles.
You're going to need something a little more truck-like to safely pull another car, though.

yea dude i hear ya with the brakes, tires, and not worrying
yea id search around for a 2wd toyota or nissan..you can find a fixer upper for cheap..besides those 22re and ka24s last forever..
ill be copping one of those for myself in the spring...then i can make the egg nasty..and i can stop carrying pool chemicals and equipment around in a h22 hatch

I wouldn't try towing a trailer and a car that weighs more than the tow vehicle itself. I would invest in a nissan or toyota to pull the car with. The Lude will thank you.

Pick up a mid 80's to mid 90's full size pickup with a 6 cylinder (I like a Ford F150 with the 4.9L straight six) and a big rear differential (3.3:1 or better) for a couple hundred bucks. That'll pull a car for sure and you wont break it.

Personally, I'm not doing anything to it.
Recently though, my friend's sister ran it into an SUV. It's going to be fine though

I have towed two different civics with my h22 lude.
One was a ls/turbo hatch that fried the rings. with two people in it I pulled it about 30 miles down the highway. I left the a/c on by accident. The hardest part is actually trying to figure out where to rev it out to so when you switch gears you don't bog or spin the clutch.
I also towed a coupe with a broken axle about 10 miles.
The thing is when I towed these it was with a tow strap so the rear car has to slow the front car. which isn't bad when they are around the same size cars. (lude and civic.) I had a friend tow a crx with an ford expo and they over heated the brakes on the crx trying to keep the tow line taught.
I would be afraid of the brakes overheating on the lude from trying to stop the ls1 powered rx and itself.
