need help w/ project.. 89 civic dx w/ jdm d15b motor..
can it be done? is it that hard? a friend has the car and is about to get the motor.. is it pretty much the same swap as a d16z6? any info or links anyone has would be MUCH appreciated.. thanks
Yes, it can be done.. It's basically the same as the D16z6.
What you'll need to do is remove the timing belt cover and change the engine mount bracket.. Just use the one from the old 89 DX motor.. Other than that.. the motor should bolt right into the car and onto the tranny.
As for wiring... that's going to be different.. The D15B uses a single wire O2 just like the 88-91 Civic, but the 92-95 Civic use a 4 wire O2... Depending on your method of engine management.. just have to make note of that difference..
So people switch over the whole ecu/harness to 92-95 Civic harness... but that's quite a bit of work.. And some just prefer to use the stock ecu a MSD rpm activation switch.. It's up to you...
Another thing to take into consideration is the DX is Dual point fuel injection and the D15B is Multipoint Fuel injection.. So you'll have to decide which ecu to use.
IMO.. unless he's getting this D15B for cheap/free.. it'd be cheaper and easier to get a DOHC ZC swap.
Hope this helps

1st major problem is that the car redlines at about 3300 rpms..
2nd seems to have power surges sometimes.. i think his main problem is the wiring he has done to the distrubtor.. is it true that it requires the whole distrubtor to be rewired cause its a reverse firing order or something?
he had some friends help him put in the motor and i dont think that they knew exactly what they were doing when they did it cause they did a terrible job..
the info i know now is he has the stock dx ecu, stock dx tranny, jdm d15b sohc vtec motor and some messed up wires..
what would cause the car to have a rev limit so low at 3300?? any help is appreciated.. thanks
