Default Oil temp

What is the Normal oil temp, say cruising at highway speed? Weather is slightly hotter here and I find my oil temp at around 100-102 mostly... that worries me when I get on the track.. do you think an oil cooler is needed??

What about water temp?

100? I don't even think that's possible. Are you sure? Where are you measuring your temps from?

Typically our cars run the oil VERY hot. 250+ on track.

Well, with a TypeR, you have a water to oil cooler. It should keep the temps within the rage of 220-240 at the end of a track session. I do not have such a cooler, but I do have a front mount cooler. When it was 50 outside, my temps never got over 210 for the 20 minute session. Going to the track next weekend so I'll know more then.

typer77, do you mean 100 celsius or fahrenheit???

Isn't the usual rule that you want your oil about the same temp as your water???

was just reading the latest Option mag w/ a little article from spoon.

Mr. Spoon was saying that most non honda motors will let go w/ oil temps at 130º or more. He then went on to say that the materials used by Honda, especially in the type R motors, are so much better than other mfg's that oil temps of 140º+ and rev'ing it out to redline on the track is not a problem for DC2/EK9s. Also, he said that oil coolers are unnecessary since the potential problems outweigh the benefits. (I didn't get a chance to read further about these potential problems, since I had to get back to work )

For those knowledgable about these sorts of things, what do you think of what mr. spoon had to say?

I'm putting an additional oil cooler on the car.
Other than leaks and the potential of terminal type damage if hit in a race, I don't see too many other drawbacks.

100 C is only 212 F, right? That isn't very high, at least not under track conditions.

I´ve hit 275º F without cooler during hard runs. With oil cooler never hit more than 235º F

Well since the ITR already has the oil cooler on it already, a potential draw back could be buying another oil cooler!

Yes, the itr has an oil cooler (stock).

Ed,

I think you're going to be an exception for the no oil cooler suggestion

Routing the lines for an oil cooler can be problematic due to space constraints - but otherwise I see no reason why an external oil cooler is a bad idea. It gives you more oil capacity too which is a good thing no?

The Spoon AP1 has an oil cooler on it - not sure about the DC2 - prolly though.

yea, oil cooler is not recommanded by spoon, i think its prolly becuase the oil presure drop, and vtec motor heavily depends on oil.

yes, this is what i have read too. The addition of lines and all the other components that go with can result in a loss of oil pressure. I know next to nothing on this subject matter so dont count me on this. But interesting to see that another person has the same idea.

I'd like to bring this thead back to life. Has anyone had experience with finned oil pans or heat wrapping to combat on track oil temps?

we have a special oil pan heat shield, oil temp is stable under hot day track condition.

Oil cooler is HIGHLY recommended !!

This is the temp after a few laps in Hockenheim in summertime WITH oilcooler...
And please don`t run that 0W30 crap... Use high viscosity oil that doesn`t smoke away when the fight gets hot (50 or better 10W60).

Has anyone tried putting air cooling fins on the stock oil pan? I see Spoon has a design with one that is very expensive, but by just welding on a could of small fins to the stock pan wouldn't it have a similar effect? All the fins are doing is letting heat transfer to them and letting the exposed surface area get cooled by air correct?
