Default dx final drive in Si tranny......

i am putting a D16Z6 in my 88 crx with a 89 crx Si tranny. I am wanting to put the final drive from a dx in there just for the low rpms so i can do some highway driving withought the high rpms. I have seen this topic on here before, where can i get the dx final, how hard is this to do, what all do i need from the dx, what year dx if it matters, and how much would a fair price be to pay a shop to do this if the tranny is already out and they don't have to put it in the car either? thanks...

i think it would be WAY easier to just trade someone the Si tranny for a DX. the gears are the same except the final drive...

no sir......i have a 88 dx crx. i put the Si in cuz the gears are faster. you can argue with me all you want but i have looked at rpm's for speed....Si is about 5 mph slower than dx at 3k rpms.....but the gears go faster..they are geared tighter.....my old dx tranny got thrown out tho...

the final drive affects ALL gears, so the Si tranny will be at different speeds than the dx since the final drives are different. if you don't believe me, i'll post the equation on how to find your top speed in every gear.

i have heard the si and dx gearing is the same, just the final drive is different (like turbohf said). i am not 100% sure of this, though.

i think what you want to do is swap out your 5th gear. if you want lower highway cruising rpms, just swap out the 5th gear for a longer 5th gear.

Breaka is right. 1st through 5th are identical in the DX and the Si. The only difference is the final drive. Your best bet would be to pick up a DX tranny. Changing out the final drive would cost more than the tranny is worth. Another option would be putting in an HF 5th gear. That would drop your Highway RPM's and not hurt your overall performance.

*Edit
By the way if you interested in a DX tranny I have a spare one and would be willing to trade for the Si.

hmm..i've had both trannies in my car with the same d16Z6 motor..yes i rev a lil higher on the highway..but my mpg difference isnt very noticeable. i dont burn that much more gas with an Si tranny. i was getting about 335 miles on a full tank (89 DX) with my DX tranny and i get about 325 now? 10miles less now but i pull a whole lot harder and im not as sluggish....just my opinon

so why does the 5gen civic Si use the same gear ratios as the 4gen DX tranny if the 4gen Si tranny has better gearing??
what does FINAL DRIVE mean anyway ???

I'm guessing for gas mileage, since every auto manufacturere has to conform to standards every year etc.

it did, but i'm saying that i do not want to get rid of the Si tranny. I love the gears for racing, just wanted lower high way driving and a higher top speed now that i'll have the power to turn it.

the final drive is somewhat of a "divider" for the gearing. the higher the final drive, the shorter the gearing.

well, MSD 6AL currently set at 7800 rpm, pull the chip from it and I'd have 8500 rpm via ECU.

I've seen 140+ once, now I don't even try anymore.
