Should receipts go with car when it's sold?
Should I be required to give the buyer of my car copies of my receipts for performance parts, maintenance, etc? The guy who bought my ITR beleives I should give them to him, but I don't really want to... What's common practice?
If they have personal info on them like account numbers, I'd say no. If the receipts are for parts still under warranty, I probably would give them.
I have heard of people giving receipts with the purchase/sell of a car.
I am not sure if your car was stock or not. But if you have some aftermarket parts, maybe the new owner wants someone to claim/show ownership in case of future problems (cops). As far as maintenance records, he might want them in case he plans on selling the car in the future and might want them and as a selling point or for warranty claims.

why would you want to keep receipts for parts on a car you no longer have??.. i think you should atleast give the guy the reciepts if he is asking for them.. what happens when he wants to sell the car and doesnt have proof of whats done to the car..
as said above if it has account numbers or something then i would cut that part out.. but honestly what use do you have with the reciepts.. if you have some sort of reasons i would atleast make the guy copies of them all..

Most of the receipts are for aftermarket parts, nothing under warranty. Most of them are from the same shop, and the pricing on them reflect "shop car" pricing which is generally discounted from the regular retail pricing of the shop the parts came from. Most of these receipts also show my account # etc on them. I guess if the guy wants them that bad, I will go make copies of them all and black out any info I don't want him to see.
i thought it was standard practice to give receipts and anything pertaining to the history of the vehicle to the new owner.
i'd say it was more odd that you want to keep them for a car you no longer own. however as its got account details on them as has been suggested, block them out on the copier and give the new owner the copies

as for me, i only have one receipt and that's for the new transmission that acura put in (need it in case cops wonder where the vin is on it).
however, i got lucky and the car was maintained at acura, so i can go there and get every receipt printed out...

i guess it just depends on what the reciepts are realy for.. if its small stuff like intake, and a catback i would say dont worry about it.. but if its motor work or something like that i would say i myself would like to have reciepts of that.. not only for me to know its in there, but also for when i was to resell the car..
and for me buying a heavily modded car already, reciepts were a must..

So, you sold the whole car, but don't want to give up some useless documents. Just as long as there's no personal info on them, what's the difference.

Another reason he may want them is for insurance purposes.
When I get my GSR back from paint, I will be putting a near $20k insurance policy on it due to the amount of modifications on it. The insurance company has no problem with this as long as you have receipts for everything you bought to prove what you paid for stuff in case of accident/theft.
No receipts, no reimbursement.

Black out your personal information(if any) on the receipts and make copies. Keep the originals or copies, whichever works for you.
I would be more worried about my personal info being passed around than keeping the receipts.

As a potential buyer, I personally will not buy a modded car without reciepts. Sure, black out your personal info but give the man the receipts so he knows really what he's getting. Make copies if you'd like to keep record but I don't see a problem giving them up with personal info blacked out.
I always give all reciepts for parts when i sell my cars, theyre no good to me and i always mark on them the mileage and date they were installed as a form of record. IMO they help sell a car, as the potential buyer can see the amount spent on it and have some sort of peace of mind that i didnt skimp on parts etc etc
