195/65/15 too big?
Hi all,
will be driving the R this winter, and wondering whats the largest size height of a tire that will fit? im on stock ride height.
I found a good deal on some steelies with 195/65/15. Will it have rubbing issues?
thanks

That tire is ~1.6" taller than the oem size (195/55/15). I'm sure it will fit, but a 25" diameter tire is really too tall for the car IMO, even for snowtires.
It might rub (I'm thinking it probably will, but you'll have to try it) and it's definitely NOT a good idea. However...
If you would get the steelies (alone, no tires) anyway for the price you are going to pay for the steelies with tires, then the tires are essentially free - in which case sure, get them and try them out. They may rub and they will throw off the speedometer (it will read low by 6.6 percent, which is quite a lot). Worst case, you have to take them off and get new tires, in which case you might get something by selling them, otherwise pay Wal-Mart $6 disposal fee to remove them and mount something else, nothing much lost by having gotten the tires along with the wheels. And if it works out, then you get the tires for free - and free tires rock!
If you're paying more for the steelies than you would if they didn't have tires, then I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't pay anything for tires in the wrong size.
Also, if the wheels/tires are being shipped, I would ask the seller to have the tires removed; otherwise, you'll probably be paying ~$40-50 more in shipping costs for the wheels/tires than you would for the wheels only.
When you are buying new tires, stick with either 195/55-15 or 205/50-15.

I used to run 205/50 R16 snow tires, on a +40mm 16x7 wheel. These are shorter than a 195/65R15. They would rub occasionally (mostly when pulling into my driveway, going over the curb). They got worse when I lowered the car. I'd buy the wheels/tires again for the price I paid, but if I was getting new I'd get the right size.
YMMV (etc.)

Let me edit this to add: I ran the wrong size tire because they were dirt cheap used snow tires off of a prelude with the same bolt pattern. If I was buying snow tires today, I'l stick with 195/55, 205/55, 205/50 R15's. Also, I was off on the size of the tire, which I fixed above.
