IM in the middle of building an LS/VTEC and was doing some research and heard alot of people saying that the titanium retainers wera fast so was looking into the crower chromoly ones. They make to different styles, on for stock springs and one for aftermarket, was wondering which ones to use with my skunk2 valve springs.
use crower springs part number 68188/16 thats directly from crower and use part number 87093 for the chromoly reatiner this is what i'm going to use with skunk2 stages2 cams and super tehc flat valves in my daily driver gsr

hey 86si why do you say crower sucks
i'm thinking of reuseing my skunk2 springs with crower choromoly retainers since is a daily drivier and Ti reatiners weaar oput and need replacing

i dropped a valve twice with a crower spring kit. they were not old and floated the valves. maybe its just my bad luck but i will never use crower valve products again. use manley or Ferrea.

I would be willing to bet that they wern't spec'd properly or you have problems with mis-shifting. I use stock retainers cus i'm cheap in my 275 whp drag car revving to 10k and every engine i build i use the cro-moly ones which are stronger and have never and will never have a problem. Coil bind will mess up valves and retainers everytime. THE TITANIUM RETAINERS ARE JUNK!!! I haven't every seen a set that wasn't worn after 15k miles no matter if they were crowers ti-17 or skunks. I think the crower ti-17 are the best ti but i have seen them wear out multiple times too.

I did too, ruined my portflow head and built block

Titanium retainers wear out because of poor material spec. It's a "trend" to offer them. The good ones are not cheap.
The AMS 4900 series comes to mind as a good, but seldom used choice.
A good heat-treated 6al/4v titanium will outlast most spring sets.
On a street car that has modest rev's, ti is a bit overkill, but to each his own.
The chrome-moly ones will be fine, and they will be lighter than stock for the same strength.
Does skunk2 not make a retainer to match the spring other than Ti?
Another option would be crower valve springs.

so your telling me that i can run chromoly retainers made by crower and dual valve springs made my supertch together on my daily driver and they'll last forever and ever and take a crazy beating
also how can i tell if the chromoly is a snap fit on skunk2s i have the skunk2 already can you explain please thanks

i should be able to use the chromoly retainers with crowers springs right? im doing an all motor ls and its going to be my daily driver. dont want valves dropping after a couple months of driving.
wel the only way to find out is get somebody on here to speak up on the chromonly and how long they had them and any problems
im going to go chromoly retainers with supertech springs and skunk2 stage2 cams

Going on 3-4 years..
No chips, no problems. No worries..when i shift at 9400rpms, i have no doubt the valvetrain can handle it..this valvetrain was top of the line when i got it and still is..their springs support up to a 12.5mm lift too..i'm currently running the s2s2 cams on there now, but i'm thinkin of switching to the pro1s

I believe he is but would like a confirmation
I believe he is but would like a confirmation
I am indeed running
68188-16 - VALVE SPRINGS DUAL HONDA B16A-ACURA 1.8 GSR VTEC
- $329.95
There Hi-press Full race valvesprings
87093-16 - TITANIUM RETAINERS HONDA
- $191.94
These retainers..
Their valvetrain is very quite, and has been threw 3 sets of cams..with each different settings, the car has seen every rpm from 8100rpms, all the way to 10k at least a few times.. i've even misshifted a few times..not alot but enough to know that when it does happen this valvetrain can handle it..
i hope this helps in your quest to figure out what you wanna do, and i hope this is the same retainers we're talking about..
FYI: Its not good to mix and match internal parts, at least not to me it isn't..because you dont know how each part will react to each setting...if your goin to go supertech, use their valvesprings as well dont cheap out..believe me..the full valvetrain is probably around 520..and crower will even give u a deal if u buy both the retainers / springs at once i've delt with them on quite a few occansions..i hope this helps.
