A guy wants to trade his 04 CBR600RR for my 1G DSM...need some insight.
Well, as the title says, some guy wants to trade his CBR600RR '04 for my 1G DSM, straight up, no cash involved.
I've been wanting to get a bike for some time now, and I wanted to start with something slower and older, because even if I know I have great self control and don't want to take things fast, it would be better to start with a slower machine overall.
The bike is worth much more than my car, the thing is that finding a Eclipse GSX is very hard in here.
So, would it be wise to go ahead with the trade? I know that if I get the bike, the first thing to do would buy all my gear and insurance, and I have a good friend of mine that has experience with them teach me how to drive it (There's no such thing as a MSF course in here).
The bike has low miles and the paint is a little scratched, from a couple of little falls. I'm taking a friend that is a bike mechanic to check it with me, nevertheless, to check for frame or engine damage.
Help me guys, I want a bike very bad and this is a great opportunity but I don't know if a 600RR would be way too much for a bike novice to handle.

Most people here will say a modern 600 is too fast to learn on. I tend to agree, being a newbie myself. But honestly, it would be pretty hard to pass up that deal. Do you have access to a smaller bike you can learn on?

Sorry for the "drive" thing. In spanish it applies to both cars and bikes, I must've been thinking in something else
I will go check the bike througly, to see if everything is in order. If it is, I think I will go through the deal, and see if I can sell it for a little profit and buy an older 600 or 400 and have a little left.

He posts in a local forum I'm part of, also we have many friends in common. The bike is legit, with plates and all the import documentation.
According to a friend, the bike is scratched from a couple falls in his own parking garage, and in his street, nothing too serious. But like I said, I will bring a bike mechanic to check the frame for damage.
I'm really being cautious with all the details, because it sounds like a good deal, but we all know the saying "If it's too good to be true..."

No worries about translation...we're a bit jaded from some of the idiots who come onto HT and brag about being able to handle 400hp cars and wanting to 'drive' bikes now.
FWIW, the same translation in Mandarin would have me saying "I want to open bike."

At least it seems kinda legit. Most people who contribute on a forum are not out to screw other people over, but that's not to say it has not happened before. I hope it works out for you, because Honda > DSM anyday.

Yeah, I've been reading this forum for a long time...but I forgot the "drive" thing because I was thinking in spanish at the time
I have experience with driving karts, and formula cars, but I know bikes are a whole different experience. Even I didn't started driving a Formula Ford 2000, so I know that in bikes the learning curve is higher.

Well, the full story is that he has a Mitsu Colt, and he swapped in a 4G63 and the whole AWD tranny into it (It originally comes with a 1.8 NA engine and FWD) with lots of mods (Shep tranny, GT35, etc, etc, etc) and runs 11's-10's. But the Colt platform is not enough so he wants a 1G DSM so he can transplant the built engine and drivetrain to the Eclipse to be like Shepard or something like that. AWD DSM's are very, very hard to find in here, and he has lots of money, and he read that I was looking to get a bike and he offered me the trade.
Thanks for the advice so far people, keep the comments coming

Almost everyone drops there first bike, if the bike already has little imprefections I would say keep it. The bike is pretty fast, but you can ride a fast bike slow and have room to grow. Personally I see no reason to sell the bike for an older bike becuase after about 3000 miles (if not less) you will be kicking yourself wishing you kept it.

Here is the problem with that. You can ride a fast bike slow but it will most likely take you much longer to learn to ride the fast bike than some one that started out on something that is much more forgiving.
I own an RC51. I've been riding for about 8 years or so, and I'm thinking about trying to find a used sv650 this summer so I can do track days and possibly race. I'm not going to be kicking myself 3 months later because I didn't buy a bigger track bike.
If you want to listen to that mentality, go buy a gsxr1000 and good luck not getting killed.

Your line of reasoning applies 100% to a track only bike where you will be riding at the limit but when it comes to a street bike, I don't think you can apply that line of logic.

That's exactly what I've been thinking...the learning curve should be much higher on a newer sport bike than an older one.

LOL where did you saw it?
That's one of the reasons I want to do the trade...get the bike, put it for sale, and meanwhile try to learn how to ride it...if somebody appears interested, sell and buy older bike, but in the meantime continue to ride the RR.
Let's see how it goes, I told the guy to hold for a couple weeks while I finish classes so I can learn how to ride in the vacations...

Yes, thats a good trade for sure.
As long as there are no problems with the bike, never been dropped, regular oil c hanges, etc..
Even in the end, if you wind up feeling the bike's not for you...you can turn around and sell it and you'll have made a profit.

nowhere in this thread does it say anything about a gsxr1000, its a 600rr for trade. And there is a big difference between learning on a 600 and a 1000, I learned on a 600 and so have most of my friends, you just have to be smart and not get over your head. Thanks for being a smartass though

I'm feeling so shitty right now. I've just talked to the guy, and he decided to not go ahead with the trade, because some of his closest friends bought bikes and now he got the fever again.
So, no bike for me at the moments. I was already so excited. What a letdown.
