Hi!
Im contemplating buying a USED H22 N/A buildup from a friend which includes:
Crower stage 2 camshafts with stock idle lobes
Crower valvetrain
Greddy timing belt
Mahle 11.5:1 pistons
Im actually not buying but trading for some stuff I have lying around.
To get to the point..........
The Crower cams and valvetrain is OK, still running in his current setup.
He did however got a problem with the Mahle pistons.
They seem scarred a bit on the skirts....
I was there when he dropped in the pistons and I told him that he needed to have type s rods or aftermarket to accept the floating wrist pin design. He just press fitted the pins in OEM JDM rods.
Question1:Could this be the reason of the scarring?
The engine started up, but made a mechanical noise, so was stripped down again, hence the scars on the skirts.....Its not that bad though, you can still see the (forging?) stripes through the scars.
Question 2: Im VERY VERY low on cash, can the OEM rods be modified to accept floating pins, and how complex would this conversion be (for machine shop)?
Question 3: The pistons have a black/graphite rectangle on the skirts, while Ive seen ads with gold skirts (hence the name Gold Series) for the drop in, FRM compatible pistons. Could this be an issue?
On the piston crown there is : H22220425D10
and is listed as the drop in piston.
LMK what u guys think!

Scars are not deep at all, it just shows that the skirt came in contact with the cylinder walls...........dunno how that happened though......maybe the wrist pins were pressed in at an angle since the guy im getting these pistons from just used a generic hydraulic press .............
I will have pics up tomorrow............
PS: I already have an ectra set of rods.............P13Z5 if im not mistaking.......ill include them in the pics.

pics r up

Please note that the "special" coating on the skirts is grey/graphite, while the Mahle ads show the Gold Series in....................gold........
Also noteworthy is that the pistons were mounted to press fit rods while theyre a floating design........Could that be the culprit?
No scars on the cylinder walls at all, engine was running for 10 min. max.
I really need to know what caused this, and if pistons can be salvaged...........if I re-use them they will be fitted to Eagle rods......
OK, thanks in advance for the input!

yeah, I searched quite a bit and realized that Amhle made two piston types for the H22.
#1: drop in, FRM compatible
#2: pistons for (Aftermarket) iron sleeved H22's
Googling the part number leads me only to the drop in type though......and the Mahle website is no help either.....

Any other answers to the ? above.....
I will take out the wristpins and see if any damage occured in the small end and the wristpin holes of the piston.............will also post pics if anything surprising turns up
Edit: just found out that one site really offer these pistons as the iron sleeve types:
http://www.importperformancepa....html
How can I go about this now? I specifically ordered the drop in types (why elde go with Mahle?) and received these.....
One more obstacle is that although i bought them in the US, I live ive in South America international shipping etc.......
What would u guys advise?
just sleeve the block and reuse the pistons? u think they are still ok?

From the looks of the scratches on the piston skirts I would say no, they don't look safe.
I have no idea what happens when you jam in the wrong kind of wristpins....
Call mahle and see what they say....they should cover shipping on them if it is something that is their fault....though I'm not sure I would mention the wrist pin ordeal to them.....
Good luck
