Default VSS keeps popping out of tranny WTF?!

hey guys i have a 90 crx dx. auto tranny.. im having a major pain in the *** problem which i cant seem to fix.

the VSS (speed sensor) somehow keeps getting pushed out of the tranny. there is a little flat steel plate and bolt holding it there and keeping it from coming out..

but ive taken that piece out and flattened it with a hammer about 10 times now and i put it all back together. i drive it around for about 10 miles and all fo a sudden my speedometer stops working and i got and check the VSS and somehow something is forcing it out of the tranny because it literally bends that metal piece 45+ degrees holding it in there and it pops out and bam ATF everywhere.

this is so pissing me off because i cant seem to figure out how this is happening and how to fix it. i even tried ziptieing it into place and nothing.

ive had the car for years now and it just started doing this..

thanks for any help!

btw its a cable driven VSS so i guess the VSS is at the cluster but you guys know what i mean..

number 8 in the pic is what gets bent in half because of something forcing the vss out of the tranny (5 speed pictured)

basically what is forcing it out of the tranny? it has to be a great force if it bends the metal tab holding it in there..

can it be the cable? when its in there the speedo works fine, just stops working when it pops out.

I don't know much about auto trannies, but on my manual one, it has to clip in just right. Hell, once it's in there just right, I don't even use the retaining clip.

mine is just like the one pictured.. slides right down in the tranny and has a notch on the side of it which the tab goes into and bolts onto tranny holding it in place. but something great is pushing/pulling it up out of there so much it bends the steal piece holding it in there like its made out of paper.

If it keeps popping it out like that (with so much force) either you're not getting in right or something is out of alignment/worn out in the tranny/diff.

I've used just hondabond to hold Vss's in without the aid of the bolt in several cars with no problems at all.

the retaining clip is bolted on there tight.. except something is forcing the vss upward in which it bends the heavy metal retaining clip upward so the vss falls out.

the metal tab retaining clip should look like this ____

but it then gets like this ___/

i dont see what could cause it to bend the retaining clip!! i keep bending it flat thoguh and putting it back but it doesnt last long before it happens again

If your diff bearings are wearing out then that would put your diff at an angle and possibly put pressure on the speedo gear and cause this, but I dunno it seems weird to me

I'm just guessing here but have someone look down the hole that your speed sensor goes in and grab your inner CV joints one at a time and wiggle them around and if the person looking down the hole sees lateral movement then you need to invest in some new bearings.

i put it on stands, put it in drive and looked down the hole.. didnt see anything wrong or anything that could be forcing it out. revved it up and got it going fast and everything. also tried reverse..

one thing i did notice was the axles where they pop in the tranny.. they seem to be a little sloppy. and i also noticed when i turn one wheel slowly the other one doesnt move at all. but it will start to move if i start turning the tire real fast..

does that seem right? it runs and drives great though.. ive had this car for about 3 years and it would always vibrate the car when i put it in reverse also.

I was having the same exact problem as you. My first solution was electrical tape. Put the VSS cable all the way down in there like it's supposed to be then wrap electrical tape around the cable and the metal post that it goes into. That helped mine for a couple of months and didn't ever have a problem, although a couple weeks ago the tape started expanding and got loose so I just redid it and no more problems. Hope it helps. Also isn't there a little rubber boot thing that goes over the cable and the post? There is on my car...

i diont think you understand.. the entire unti is being forced out fo the tranny.

the STEEL tab that holds it on the tranny actually gets bent when its forced out.

so if steel wont hold it in there i dont think some tape will.

not for aluminum,.. now obviously if i weld it in there then something is going to give and that would be the gears for the VSS. they would explode.

wahts wrong people?!?!
