Default 89CRX Si dash into a 90 hatch Si

before you guys flame me and tell me to search i did and went thru all 245 results that i got for "crx dash" in the archives and found nothing concrete for this question.

ok so i know that the dash from a diff year will make things slightly more difficult. so what will i need to do make this work? the wiring is different for the 2 years right?

can i keep my stock guage cluster? can i just swap the dash, the middle console and the metal bracket behind it and call it a day or is it harder than that?

you can use the cluster but you have to swap the whole dash and center console.
88-89 wiring same; 90-91 wiring same.
Same with the cluster

yep, it will make it a whole lot easier, if you can find a 90-91 crx dash, then it will be plug and play if i can remember right. Its been a while since ive done it.

so the wiring if the wiring not the same, then how much trouble will it be to do it?

i can get a mint dash but what would i need to complete the swap?
dash, middle console, metal braket for stereo and heat controls im assuming.

what wiring will i need??? i dont wanna buy this thing and get stuck w/not being able to install it.

sweet thanks i think that helps me......im still having trouble getting my head around this whole thing for some reason.

cant i just swap the dash and console and not worry about the wiring?
meaning cant i just take off the old dash and put on the new one? im not gonna rewire anything, or do i HAVE to?

you say i can keep the tach so why would i have to rewire anything if i can just reuse mine? wouldnt i keep my climate controls from my car as well?

im sorry if i sound stupid but like i said i just cant grasp this concept right now. thanks in advance

i definitely would re-rivet the vin plate

but yes, if you're keeping your cluster then the wiring thats in your car will work

another thing though, is that the metal brackets that hold the guage cluster in are different for the two years
(where the 4 screws hold in the cluster) so you'll need to change or customize those.

You also need the extra support brackets for the "hump" in the CRX dash, the CRX floor console bracket and a CRX gauge cluster hood. And it's not an easy swap by any means.

ur kidding right?

The swap, albeit may be a bit of pain in the ***, is far from hard.

When my boosted crx was totalled, we pulled the dash pad/center console/door panels/gauge cluster from the crx and swapped them into the civic hatch in about 4 hours.

To make your life easier, try and get a dash from you year specific vehicle. From there everything is plug and play and you will be good to go. The only thing we got snagged on was the lower mount bracket for the dash underneat the radio. As someone mentioned, on the crx there is a hump, where on the civic there is no hump.

good luck to ya.

so is your swap involve a dash from a different year from the car or is it the same?

my apologies, i meant to include that in my post.

My crx was a 88 dx and we pulled the dash pad from that.

My civic is a 89 dx.

So yes they are different years, but the plugs for 88-89 (in my case) were the same.

This is exactly what I meant. To me, PITA is much worse than plain hard . And yes it is a total PITA.

man that sucks this doesnt sound so sweet anymore, i was gonna pick up this dash today too but i dont think i will now.

but it sounds like if i just get the cluster from the crx instead of using mine it would make things easier, and I would just have to rewire it to fit and i wouldnt have to worry about all this stuff with the cluster mounts/brackets.

so for the record, someone correct me if im wrong in saying this:
If i got the CLUSTER, THE WHOLE DASH AND CONSOLE from a CRX that is the same year as my CIVIC (1990) then everything will be plug and play.
And even if I used my own cluster then I would still have problems with the cluster mount and brackets even though it is from the same year.

i think this all makes sense now.

I have one in my car

Car: 91 Hb Dx
Door panels: 89 CRX ?
Dash: 89 CRX ?
Center console:90 Crx Si
Gauge cluster: 90 Crx Si
Gauge hood: 90 Crx Si

This was all like over a year ago so i dont remember everything

Messy car and Deck that was all effed up because someone attempted to steal it and they couldnt get it out.

Damn my steering wheel is ugly

I think i re-wired the dash with teh OE 91 wiring, with the 91 fusebox and everything.
Cluster doesnt sit quite right in there for some reason, but you dont notice unless you grab on to it.

just use your stock harness bolted onto the back of ur hatch dash, and with the moding of the vin, and bolt holes around the cluster it should be a one day job

thanks for all the help everyone , i hope this thread will help out anyone who will have this question/problem in the future about mixing dashes from civics and crxs from diff years cause it wasnt thoroughly covered in the 4-5 pages of search results i found........well pending that people actually search in the future.

sadly I guess this swap will have to wait for me till i find a suitable donor. i really dont wanna mess with the wiring and f it all up.

This has been a very useful thread and it couldn't of come at a better time either!

I have 2 CRX's one is junk the other is going to be my new racecar. I the junk car is an 88-89 and the other is 90-91. I want to use the 91 dash and cluster because they look alot cleaner and nicer in general. But the only problem is I dont have the wiring for the 90-91 anymore. I wasn't planning on using it so I gave it to a friend who needed it more than I did (STUPID MOVE I KNOW!) The 91 CRX that I am doing all this too doesn't have a heater anymore so all I need is to wire up the gauge cluster. I noticed the pictures above of the 2 plugs for both years clusters.
My question is do I need to re-pin the whole plug in the exact order as the ones shown above or do I just need to change a few wires? I really dont know why I am having such a hard time understanding those pics but what does the X's mean?

Thanks for any help in Advance!!
