Hey guys, my friends car is having a odd problem with acceleration recently. When she's sometimes in gear 1-4, under 3000rpm the car seems to have a decrease of power/acceleration then it will pick up a bit after.

this issue started within the past 1 month or so, but it seems to be happening more and more now.

The engine is stock, no mods to it besides CAI. This problem started happening recently and it's just like the car is lacking fuel when accelerating so you get this 'shaky' feeling. Car is running on a full tank of gas, recently filled also.

I've changed the oil + filter, but that didn't do anything. I'm not sure what else to go after.

Timing has not been messed with at all and ECU is stock aswell.
-No CEL light
-idle is fine, everything seems normal till you start driving it

Any ideas on how to pin-point what the cause of this could be?

I might be completely wrong but it could be a clogged cat, my friends car would bog down randomly and then be okay again, as it turned out the cat had collapsed on itself

 

so far I've done some searching about the fuel filter and that's probably what I will replace right off the bat

about the fuel filter- do I have to replace the whole black canister or is it possible to dissasemble and replace whatever is inside?

 

check your grounds, fuel pump voltage, timing, fuel pressure, exhaust leak would be the #1 thing to check, clogged cat is rare, and fuel filter is rare problem too. Check for sticking brakes or wheels, check your TPS and MAP the list goes on....there are also some little things too like PCV vavle adn other things i dont remember that helped me out.

My problem started shortly after i isntalled my intake, are you using a K&N? thats probably why if you are, the oil messed up my sensors so now its having a hard time picking up speed. But it sounds like i have an intake and exhaust leak somehwere

id go back to OEM air box, those are the best intakes in teh world

 

Glad I checked this thread out. I also have that same problem so your situation sounds very familiar. One thing I can say to help is that it probably has nothing to do with your catalytic converter, as I currently do not even have one on the car, just a straight pipe. Lately when it occurs i've been having to wait till it tips around 4k to get the power going, it's rediculous.

 

well its a honda, however my lower RPM sometimes seems like an is300, but this is only every other weekend on a thursday (have no idea why this phenomea happens)

so this makes me believe there is a crimped wire somewhere in the engine harness. If you have gone over all the basic stuff, then check the harness. Im also thinking its the knock sensor aswell picking up nonsense.

i too have no cat, so its not the problem

+++I just fixed a problem just like this. And all it was was my spark plugs were in need of changing. The spark plg wires wernt making a good connection. make sure you take the spark plug wires off and push them through a little bit farther then they need to be. it not a big deal if they dont fit all the way back down on the valve cover. the spark plugs seal the valve cover anyways.+++

 

i had this problem in my accord and in my current civic

if i reset the ecu it seems to run fine for about a week then start up again.

i have never figured out what it was. ive calibrated my tps, change fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, dizzy cap and rotor, checked for stiking brakes. i cant figure it out.

compression test mabey? i havent checked that

timing? havent checked that either.

bump for answers, cause this problem sucks

well today we were just ouside of my house for a few min after driving around and you can hear the car backfire quite a bit. Not very loud but from the inside you can hear it.

I'm gonna swap over my fuel filter/spark plugs from my car onto hers and see if either one of those fixes the issue

 

Throttle positioning sensors can cause problems along the lines of what you are describing, I had this happen to a subaru I owned. Would stutter and choke at low RPMs.

 

Issue fixed, it was the Fuel Filter

 

congrats, i wish my problem was this easy, ive replaced just about everything down to the axles, and problem still occurs...somethings leaking.

 

My 97 del Sol VTEC occassionally has this same issue...

Funny, it just had it's OBD2 warrany done right before it hit 150k miles, so it received new injectors, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, cat, and o2 sensors, new OEM from Honda for free... (It helps to know peeps )

The timing belt was just changed 50k ago with the fuel filter, valves adjusted, and compression tests out fine... It's a very slight hesitation, mostly under part throttle... I haven't checked the PCV system at all, so probably over winter I'll give that a shot...

 

Dam...the car seemed to run fine, but then the issue started again.

I'm going to replace her spark plugs and wires and see if that helps any.

 

Did any of you check your O2 sensors?

no cel code...and it's the factory o2 so it would be a pita to pull it out of the exhaust manifold

 

This hasn't been thrown out there yet, but how old is the clutch? Is it possible that maybe it's slipping down low when you're trying to accelerate?

 

You dont need to pull it out to check it, If you have some kind of logging software you can check the voltage it is putting out, or you can have a mechanic check it with one of those snap-on scanners.

A small vacuum leak isn't going to negatively affect performance... it's just like opening the throttle up more, that's it.

 

FUEL PUMP.

 

um, a small vaccum leak isnt gonna effect it? think again....go to mcdonnalds, ask ronald for a small cup of water. Put a small hole in the straw. The water=cold air, and velocity, also intakes need negative pressure to work best.

A vaccum leak will definatly cause some problems..

My guess is its either timing, or exhaust leak....you never know, i have an exhaust leak and would NEVER know.
