Short Shifter Bad Bearings
Hi, im a complete noob when it comes to transmission, i recently got my short shifter installed, i was told that there is a 50-50 that the bearings may not be able to handle the short shifter, well i guess i got the bad 50 haha, the shifter makes a horrible rattly sound when its in gear my best guess is that i need better bearings, so can you guys please help me out on how to change em myself, in mind im a noob at shifter
i dont even know where the bearings are at the moment my guess is on the shifter hehe, but with you guys's help i can do it, also let me know what bearings u guys sugges
Thank you

does it make a buzzy, rattling sound? i put a b&m in mine and it buzzed and rattled at about 70mph. If your shifter doesnt have a spherical bearing or tight bushing that doesnt rattle in the pivot, its prob gonna rattle. I just put my stock shifter on, i didnt find any advantage to the short shifter xcept if buzzed and drove me nuts.
no i honestly hate the stock shifter, but im trying to find out what this rattling noise is, it gets louder that higher RPM i hit and on 5th i barley hear it, the worst one is in 3rd and when im in 3rd i hold on to the shifter and slightly push it up a little higher so the rattle stops.
any idea guys

ya I got a B&M on my 97 LS. It rattles too and drives me nuts..Not too sure how to fix it..I've taken the shifter out a couple of times and relubricated it. The rattling goes away for a lil while then just comes back.

There is another potential cause. If it isn't touching the exhaust, then it could be excess vibration of the engine. The shift linkage is directly connected to the engine and tranny, so if the engine vibrates, the shifter will. Sound possible?

some short shifters will hit the exhaust, so you might need to lower your exhaust a little. just get underneath the car and look.

i'd double check the bolts and nuts, make sure they're all tight. I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the long 12mm bolt through the actually shifter. Just get under and kinda shake the assembly to see if you can pinpoint where the noise might be coming from but other then that GOODLUCK
i am going to tell u what happened with my 91 TEG DA i bought the car with stock ls o whatever the car had lots of upgrades so it was nice and one day my shifter started making the same noise u guys are saying so i am a mechanic put the car in the air and the guy that had my car cut the heat shield because when u install a short shifter the original if u compare both of them if u see the ball in the bottom one has the rod bigger or larger than the other one and what happens is that the car doesnt have any bearings or anything like that all what it has is a plastic around the little ball in the bottom of the shifter well u have ur catalic converter right below the shifter can u guess where all that heat is going is going direct to the shifter and it melts that plastic what i did is that i went to a junk yard and got the original shifter and the heat shield from a 90 DA and i just went stock shifter and took out the dc sports short shifter that my car came with when i bought it i dont know how the 94 teg shifter looks like but if is a 90 to 93 thats ur problem plus someting else short shifters dont work for me u just have to be a good driver and thats it so take that out dude and put ur original back on is not that difficult it took me probably like 10 minutes to take it out and 10 to put it in and that was my first time doing it by the way it comes off from the bottom of the car just in case u dont know but make shure u have ur heat shield and if is cut or comething get a new one or get one at ur local junk yard cause if u put it back on like that is going to be the same thing hope it helps and if i am wrong please feel free to correct me thanks!
Ya, #8 in this diagram, seat. $9.36 And #19 & #16 are bushings. No bearings.

I have been told before that this seat wears out. When I installed my B&M SS, I didn't pay to much attention, but I did lube it up good.

I had a similar problem recently. Seems like the nut that was holding the shifter together under the car was coming loose, causing a rattling noise. A quick trip to Orchard Supply Hardware got me a longer replacement that fit two nuts and some loc-tite. Does not rattle anymore.
My first integra was a DA and when i installed a short shifter a noticed a rattling sound. it was the end of the shifter hitting the heat sheild underneath. i went under an pryed abit more clearance between the shifter end and the heat sheild and the rattle went away. I doubt the shifter bearings are bad.

holy crap no punctuation FTL!! Seriously I couldn't even read that.
My shifter rattled when I first installed it over 5 years ago. The problem was that the bottom part of the shifter was not as wide as the stock shifter, so I added some washers and a lock-washer on the through-bolt as a spacer, and since then it has never rattled once.

i called the people who installed my shifter, what they said is that the bolt it loose, when i asked them why they didnt make it tight from the begging they said theres 2 settings but when i take it tommorow theyll make the bolt tighter to be held this way. hopefully this fix it !
damn, i have the same rattling noise, i was worried i cracked the shifter, im gonna go check the bolts now. I dont have a heat shield but i dont think it could melt wateva the hell the one dude was talkin bout. Hopefully its just loose.
very nice write up nightdeamon, it makes sense, and i mean bushings not bearings sorry haha, but thanks for the info
as for me hopefully tommorow when the bolts are tighten'd it will sound better, i will keep u guys updated.

put my car on the lift today to see if i could tighten up the bolts on the shifter, turns out that everything is tight, i figured the rattlin has to be comin from the motor, my one motor mount is startin to crack. ordering a new one tomorow, so hopefully thats the problem. i have pretty much ruled out everything that people have said in previous posts.
i would suggest checkin the motor mounts if u continually have a problem with the shifter rattling/vibrating

So when the car was on the lift, you checked and wiggled the shifter around and didn't move around at all on the bolt?
no no no. my best guess is that your problem isnt as bad as you think it is..try going online and ordering a "polyurthane bushing kit". should only run you about 15 bucks so its worth a try. take the oem rubber bushings off and replace them..polyurthane is a much stronger material and can handle higher rpm's with much less vibration. the only bad news is you will have to take your exaust back off and remove the short shifter. good luck..let me know how it works out.
