Dam! Thanks for the vid. Its not often we get to see engine components at work in real time like this. BTW..what spring was that?

http://www.spintron.com/

CV Products has on available for rent.I have seen footage with the spring "floating".Neither touching the seat or the retainer. This is a critical tool for valve spring development.I know Comp Cams and Isky have them.

never seen a diesel run a T@D shaft mounted rocker arm and it was spining way
to many rpm's to be a diesel

T@D is the manufacture,a rocker arm is the blue thing you see going up and down,
and its mounted on a shaft instead of a stud.

im a diesel mechanic................ Detroit to be exact. i just didn't know if the T@D thing was a typo. and just to throw it in there the engines i work on use shaft mounted rocker arms on a OHC design engine. and i agree with u 100% about the engine spinning way to fast to be a diesel.

how do you know how fast the engine is spinning?

well how fast is it spinning then? and what characteristics do you use to translate that into an actual number or range of possible RPMs?

What do you want, an exact number? Im saying, for the valve to be "bouncing" like that, you got to be spinning a little faster than a deisel normally would.

no not at all. i know pin pointing a number would be near impossible unless you know the speed of the camera. i was just wondering what you were looking at to estimate speed. just trying to learn

Surge is much like a tidal surge. **** just keeps going when it shouldn't.

There are a couple design elements that can lessing this "surge". One is have an inner and outer spring rub each other. Another is to have the spring assymetrically wound in various configurations that produces varying spring rate along the length of the springs, another simple one is to anchor both ends of the spring. But what do I know, I am just a lackey.

Good topic. Constipation Contraption.

You can see the top of the valvestem slightly bouncing away from the rocker!! That is insane!! The spring almost looks like its made of some sort of gelatinous material.....

I don't want to jack the thread but it is sort of related. How come there isn't a SINGLE beehive spring/retainer designs for any Honda motor available? They are getting big in domestics. I can't see any drawbacks to it. You could use a steel retainer that is just as light or lighter than a "conventional" titanium retainer--and have steel's durability, using beehives.

I remember there being a discussion about this design in the old RM forum. I have that forum now, but I don't have time to do a search right now. If you want, you can take a look for yourself. The link to it is in the "home page" part of my profile.
