Default bent valves because of water pump

on my friends DA...91 ls

we were driving down the highway and heard this grinding noise, about 2 min later the temperature went passed the H!! we turned the car off, we tried turning it on but didn't so we checked and the water pump got loose, water was all over the timing belt, so we checked, and bingo, it was the water-pump

okay so about 5 hours later, we bought and replaced the pump, turned the car ON and it was just sputtering...like if it were missfiring...we drove it, and it felt better, didn't feel a power loss, but in neutral it sputters...

one of our friends drove up and heard it and told us that the timing might have jumped and said that, that noise it was giving was because of bent valves...can this be true!!!

he also said that it could be that the headgasket blew because of the temperature reached H

If the pump went, it could of gotten stuck, forcing the timing belt around it,
Or getting caught up on it, and having another gear spin.

But it's possible it could of, especially with water on the belt,
it could of slipped on the cams/crank, and misaligned it enough to bend a valve, or two.

Ticking sounds that weren't there before could be related, or Pull the head.

could it be the headgasket?...there is no ticking sound, just sputtering

Not really sure, you would probably have other signs if it was the HG,
like possible milky oil, or some type of smoking/leaking.

I mean, if you Have the time some weekend, and you think it's the HG anyways,
they're under $50, of course not mentioning the cost of headbolts,
but you could get a much better idea probably if you had the head off.

That is if you have narrowed it down enough to think it lies in the head,
and it's not some other problem.

A timing belt jumping time by a tooth or two will not lead to bent valves. With the overheating, you most likely damaged the head gasket. Check for white smoke from the exhaust and bubbles in the radiator coolant. (Make sure the car is cool before you open the radiator cap.)

If you still think it is bent valves, perform a compression test. A leakdown will tell you even more information.

Where would the air pockets come from unless you have a source of air, such as gasket blow-by? The compression test is a fast and easy diagnosis. If you have low compression in a cylinder, perform a valve adjustment. If the low compression persists, you will need to pull the head.
