MIG welding Mild Steel to Stainless ... what wire should I use?
I'm assuming I should use the stainless wire???
I'm welding an intake tube and I need to use mild steel tubing (very small tubing for nipples for valve cover vent tubing to attach to intake). I'm currently welding 304 SS and have 308 (or maybe 309 ... can't remember which) wire in the machine. The intake tube will be 3" 304 SS 16 gauge metal. Not sure on the spec of the smaller tubing for the nipples, but it's definitely mild.

Use regular wire. .035 or so. If you welding the two together then why use stainless wire. You need special parameters to weld with a stainless wire properly anyways. And a machine that is capable of it.
think link should be found useful if you plan on using a stainless wire.

Sounds good man. I'm not used to seeing people on here knowing what the hell they are doing half the time. Post up some pics of the final product. Mig'ed stainless looks good!~
you couldnt use mild steel wire could you ? I was just goign to use it because the manifold is getting cermaic coated anyways and i have a bunch . or is the diffrence in the metls goign to cause a problem when heating and contracting?
I used to use 309 .028" for stuff like that. A little vac tube cant take much heat so it's nice to have the smaller wire. but if you already have all the 035 stuff just rock it. good luck

i think people should invest some time in a metalurgy class. may sound as an negative reply but there is alot that has to be known about welding. its not, i can pull a trigger or lay down some low-high and be done. knowledge is something no person can take away from you and is something you can pass on to anyone who is interested in learning....JUST MY 2 CENTS
here you go.....309ss will do the job and you can find answers like this on the lincoln electric site under filler rods and mig wires...wanst trying to be a smart *** just letting you know the knowledge you get from like 11 dollars a unit in college is priceless in return.
good luck... oh and you can pick up rem at your local metal supply shop to keep the materials the same so you dont have rust issues unless you are going to paint or something
