Default Do I really need a spring compressor?

I'm installing coilovers on my coupe and I can't find one to rent in town so can I get away without using one?
I'm pretty sure I did a spring replacement in my old CRX without using one but that was a long time ago....and I now have 95 coupe

What do you guys think?

I know this is really bad to say but.... I used to always just stick the shock in between two tires and then undo the bolt. Just make sure your hand is not in the way! Invest in a spring compresser though its alot faster and much safer.

I put a chain around the spring and stuck a big long screwdriver through the links into the ground. Worked out fine

go to local hardware store and get mini ratchet straps. they work great , but i just stand on the spring as well , take nut off , little pop , nothing major. easy to get lowering springs or coilovers back on.

The spring compressors you rent suck. They're just two giant bolts with some hooks on them.

Place foot on BOTTOM of spring and shop rag over the end nut to prevent losing it. Point against wall and loosen. It will seem violent at first, but it's really more noise than danger.

go rent the 10 dollar tool from a damn parts store and call it a day.. my old boss lost 2 fingers doing it the "ghetto way" when he was younger. Why risk getting hurt, do you guys realize how much pressure that spring is under? to bad advise.. good luck with your tires, shop rags, and using your foot.. oh and i cant foget to compliment clayne who's wise words were "point it against a wall"

I know people that lose fingers in kitchens. Doesn't stop me from being a sous chef in a high volume establishment. *shrug*

I've never even came close to losing a finger or anything dangerous removing springs the "ghetto" way. I honestly don't know how people get in those situations.

if you can fit a civic spring in your back pocket, you must be a tubby bitch.

OK guys, thanks for all the input

And like I said in the original post
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by wheelmanbg &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I can't find one to rent in town</TD></TR></TABLE>
so if I wanted to use one I'd have to buy it....just to use it this one time, so it doesn't seem worth it to me

I've done it with tie straps not the safest but if you put a ton on there it'll hold.

There's not an Autozone or O'Reilly's anywhere?

If you don't want to use it then don't...
