ITR powered EG goes - KABOOM!
Well, I've been on Honda-tech for awhile now reading over the years and gathering advice on my several Honda's that I've owned. From my ITR to my ITR powered Hatch I've had a lot of help here.
Last year I purchased a '93 Civic hatch to build as an HDPE weekend warrior to track with myself and my friend 96 SOHC VTEC. I finally got it together this spring to start tracking. Although I've had some problems getting it running right I thought I had it figured out. I guess I was wrong. Figured I'd post some pics in here with her few months of glory.
Here's my HPDE setup. 96 sohc vtec's truck, my trailer and car at Roebling.

Me and the hatch

96 Sohc vtec

96 at the wheel

The specs were as follows:

• Comptech Race Header Jet Hot Coated (Eliminates Cat)
• Mugen Oil Pan
• Skunk2 Stage 1 Cams
• Megan Racing Adjustable Cam Gears
• B&M Fuel Pressure Regulator Gauge
• AEM Fuel Pressure Regulator
• Carbing Oil Catch Can
• Head Milled 20 Thou
• Mugen Headgasket
• Microtech Standalone ECU
• Exedy Organic Clutch
• Exedy Lightweight Flywheel
• Innovative Engine Mounts
• Full 2.5in Exhaust System Routed to Magnaflow Oval Muffler
• CTR Crank Pulley
• NGK Spark Plug Wires

• Energy Suspension Shifter Bushings
This setup netted me 200whp.
And now to the good stuff...
96 and I paying a tribute to the JDM B18C

Even the dog came to pay homage.

R.I.P. B18C. I'm thinking of going with a K20 now. HHMM.

How many miles were on the enigne? How was your oil pressure's on it. Who tuned it? That sucks what happened to it, is the CTR pulley the one people don't like?

Well I feel your pain since my B18c went out with a wimper last sunday at Barber Motorsports Park (the knock knock who's there? thread). Maybe mine is salvageable though. Will see.

Dunno how much money you feel like investing, but if you're just getting into HPDEing the car, you might want to consider a cheaper engine than a K20. A stock ITR/GSR/LS would do you fine, would be super cheap, and super easy to throw in. You also won't have to cry when you blow it up.
<--- Rockin' and rollin' a B20 with ~$1000 total invested.

Dude, the dog totally did it. I mean look at the guilty look on its face. No bones for Fido till he figures out how to tune a damn Honda engine!
Seriously - B18, b16, H22, or anything cheaper than a K20 for a track beater. Once you go much over 200whp you have to start spending more $$$ on brakes, traction, suspension, tires, etc. to use that power. Plus, a 200whp hatch should smoke a vette in the straights anyway.

I feel your pain. My b18C5 popped after one qualifying session after I had it rebuilt. Had to do a rebuild on the rebuild. Ran good after that but now I just put my car in guard rail and smashed the front end two races ago.
Good luck with the new project. I would go B series again. K20 is cool but can be pricy.

My car would pull a C6 in the straightaway but the new Z06 would run right by me (about 10 cars on Sebring's front straightaway). Those things are fast
I probably am leaning towards building the B18 again and doing some stronger internals and port/polish with a reputable Honda tuner.

That sucks and don't feel bad 'cause a lot of us have been there. Also, I see that you are in Orlando and so am I. We should meet up sometime. I'm curious to know who you use as engine builder and possible exchange some notes.

For $70K the Z06 should destroy your car w/ laser beams and tube feed the driver Starbucks latte's while on track. For a $ vs accel comparison a 200whp hatch is a seriously good deal.
What car club do you run Sebring w/? What's the URL? I've always wanted to give Sebring a try.

There are several clubs that go to Sebring. The two most "track dedicated" are http://www.chinmotorsports.com and http://www.safemotorsports.com. If you want to go while there's a event going on, you can go with NASA.com or BMWCCA.com.

It isn't easy to get a B18 to 200whp without spending some serious loot. It isn't anywhere near $70,000 but I had a good amount of money wrapped up in this engine. I am still debating on doing 2.0L vs K20 vs B18 built internally.

Based on what you've said, he think's money isn't an issue for you when it comes to motor choices. I'd have to agree.
I'm not sure on the class rules, but if I had the money, I'd throw in a built B16 (great R/S ratio) with a GT28R turbo setup. A good 250-300whp would be easy and reliable to do.

yeah money isn't necessarily the issue. I just want to get the most for my money in terms of reliability and dependability. I want this motor to last a couple of seasons and not have to worry about it other than change fluids and adjust valves. My hunch is to just build the B18 and get a new block if the current one is toast.

I'll agree to that.
Having problems with the car every event = no fun. I'm also leaning towards B18 rebuild due to the tremendous amount of work it would take to put a K20 in there.
For those who know...can you build a B18C to say 215whp and have it be reliable consistently? Several people who run HPDE's with us who had former Honda's have suggested that the more you build a Honda motor the less reliable it would be. They suggested just doing minimal mods if it was going to be a track *****.
Any truth to this?
