Thinking about a fiberglass hood
Hi guys,
I was thinking about a carbonfiber hood for my Civic. Since it's going to be painted I'm reconsidering. Are fiberglass hoods very commonplace on modified Hondas? Any wellknown distributors on the boards here?
Thanks.

blah blah blah lol!! who would guess I am suggesting a fiberglass hood over a carbon one

Fiberglass is in no way lighter than carbon fiber; if you create a fiberglass hood with the proper skeleton designed to have the same strength as the OEM hood (or CF hood) you will end up with a hood that is a significant chunk heavier than CF. Strength and durability being the first things compromised with FG vs CF.
carbon fiber hoods are just one layer of carbon that adds almost NO STRENGTH! and using polyester resin makes it even worse! Trust me I do this for a living! Our carbon fiber hood for the ek civic is 14.7 lbs and our fiberglass hood is 14.1lbs. When a chinese company makes a carbon hood they take a fiberglass hood then overlay it with carbon. ADDING WEIGHT! rather then just the normal fiberglass hood.

also 99% of all carbon hoods have NO WHERE near the strength and an OEM hood. They are only one layer of carbon. They are a COSMETIC hood not designed for lightness nor strength. If they were designed for stregth and lightness they would use higher resins and no fiberglass. But a hood like that is not in the normal tuners budget

Well my CF hood is entirely carbon fiber, there is no layer of FG, and what I am saying is that if you are comparing the two (not these Taiwanese knockoffs like Seibon etc), FG will be heavier and nowhere near as durable. I also worked with composites for a number of years.
take this as example
this is a carbon hood made in china, 10lbs of pressure and it bows in

Here is a fiberglass piece manufactured the right way. You can stand on it and it will not bow in. It just all depends how it is manufactured!

exactly! i can not debate you on that! a full carbon hood will be hella stronger then any fiberglass hood and lighter of course, unless it is s-glass which is stronger then kevlar

put a big 200 pound guy on it to see if it blows

if I can find a pic, I have a pic of a guy that is 275 standing on one of our race hoods and it still will not bow in lol. I have seen fiberglass parts that are very thin hold over 1000lbs

Can you make a hood that is Fiberglass with 0 Carbon Fiber, and for a price that is less than your CF hood MSRP?
That's what I'm looking for..
are you the online dude on the compositesfab site?

Just got off the compositesfab website talking to them and they will make one, but they are special order due to low demand... Most people want the Carbon Fiber

Yo! Your site is down, can you get me a price on a 99-00 civic 2door CF and Fiberglass hood shipped to 92111 ? My car is going to paint this weekend so if I could also have a # so I can order sooner than later that would be good.
Carbon fiber is supposed to be atleast 3 layers and when it is made correctly, it is stronger than steel. some plane bodies are made out of carbon fiber and they are very strong. Like the guy before me said, its all on how its manufactured.
