225/45/16 on 6" wide rim
by squeezing the tire to fit on that rim, the sidewall is affected. when the sidewall is affected, handling is affected.
i guess it could also be dangerous as there is a greater chance that the bead would pop out, but i've never seen that happen.
i wouldn't do it, but i have seen it done.

I wouldn't do it. Most 225/45-16 tires are recommended only for mounting on wheels that are 7.0-8.5 inches wide.
Why not buy the stock size tires (205/50-16)? Remember, if you're looking for performance, the big factor is the tire model, not the tire width; if you want better performance, buy better tires, not wider tires.
A lot of excellent tires are available in 205/50-16, including the outstanding Goodyear F1 GS-D3 ($104/tire after rebate) and the "great bang for the buck" Kumho Ecsta SPT ($59/tire after rebate).
