Whose OBX LSD whines?
I'm asking because of a thread where a guy was selling an LSD that he said whirred a little, and I was wondering if something's wrong with it. This is what he said: "just put mine in last week and it tends to whir / whine at little bit on the street, not under power really, just cruising. it doesnt sound bad and there is no metal in my tranny."

Why not find a used ITR or CTR LSD. It's OEM and not $$$. The OP in the other thread used two shims, which is not correct. I would guess that it is not installed correctly just based on that fact.
Ok well I PM'd the guy and he gave me this reply which answers my question, I guess I should've PM'd him in the first place:
"well the whirring happened in a straight line. and it ended up being my 5th gear bearing cause it blew the expletive up on me when i installed the lsd i decided to replace the bearing on the main and input shaft. well i didnt get OEM honda bearings, just some that I thought would work from a local bearing store. well the didnt work, made it about 1000 miles before it went."

Because I'd be paying more for a worse part.

Yea, never say OEM is "worse." It might not be as aggressive, but when the OBX causes your tranny to blow up, you'll know why its the "worst" part.

There's only been one case I've seen on H-T of an OBX LSD blowing up, and lots more cases of the OEM LSD blowing up. If it was a common problem for them to blow up then I would've seen more of them because people are always quick to point out failures vs. good reviews of a product. That's not the case with the OBX LSD and I've only seen 1 blowup vs. lots of happy people. I've seen people using them on 500+ whp drag cars and not blowing up. Plus I read something about the OEM LSD not working as good as the OBX in a straight line (drag racing) but I'm not really sure how the OEM ones are internally and how they actually work inside.
^I had to rewrite that because I accidentally deleted it the last time I posted it :hammerhead:

I've heard the same about the Quaife/OBX (OBX is a copy of the Quaife internally) working better than the OEM although I'm not what kind the OEM one is and how it works. I've seen cases on H-T of the OEM blowing up on 300 to 400ish whp, and also working fine at those power levels. Don't forget to consider the cost of the OEM ($400/$500? used) vs. the OBX ($400 new, even cheaper used). So, cheaper and better.

That's what I thought too when I first heard about the OBX LSD and with the axle issue and stuff, but I researched it a lot lately and they've found a fix for that and the new LSDs don't have that problem anymore. Lots of people use them on high-horsepower drag cars for years now, and they hold up fine. If it works for a 500 whp drag car then it should work for my sub-200 whp (and hopefully 250-300 whp later on when I turbocharge my car but that'll be in a long time) daily driver.

I am a man of quantification. What is the torque bias ratio for either the Quaife or OBX LSDs? (I know for sure that Quaife will not disclose that information, which essentially nullifies their lifetime warranty for operation unless the differential actually fragments.) The ITR/CTR, Quaife, and OBX units are all Torsen style differentials. Does an operation test procedure exist to quantify the operation of either aftermarket unit. The ITR unit has a clear test for operational test. Not blowing up is one aspect of functionality, offering greater traction is the other. OBX can at least claim that they are cheaper than new OEM, but Quaife cannot.
BTW: I paid $250 for my ITR LSD shipped from Japan.

OEM FTW
I would put nothing less in my car, Quaife, cusco any many of the other high end LSD producers all have quality products as well
in my opinion its worth the extra money to purchase a good product that will work properly the first time than buy the cheap one and have to replace it shortly down the road

Seems like you guys are quick to point at the OBX LSD and say it's crap just because it's OBX and just because mostly everybody on H-T says it's crap, so it must be, but yet nobody really knows. Read what I say in the thread before responding. People that have tried and used and beat on these LSDs know that they will hold up, but you (who probably has never seen one, let alone used one) say that they're crap because of the brand name.

I think that a lot of people are of this opinion from the previous problems with OBX units (i.e. axles not coming out, shim problems, etc.). OBX quickly copied another's product without fully understanding the engineering. The difference in price from an OBX to a Quaife LSD is enginnering and quality control.
Here is a thread dedicated to OBX LSD issues. I understand that the squeaky wheel gathers the most attention, but some of the fitment issues are quite compelling.
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1714724
BTW: The OEM LSD can easily handle 300 WHP and comes with Honda's quality. Where people have trouble with Torsen style LSDs is when they have excessive wheel hop and not enough sense to release the throttle.

Yea I know that a lot of people had the problem with the axle getting stuck, which is fixed on the newer ones and can be fixed on the older ones too by beveling where the axle goes in.
I've already seen that thread you posted too, and I've seen people get OBX LSDs put together in horrible condition (threads stripped, washers thrown in randomly) but when people take them apart, clean then, and put everything in the right way, it all works good.
