post break job - adjusting handbrake?

Default post break job - adjusting handbrake?

Thanks to the unseen quality/qty or articles found here I finally changed my brakes myself. no kidding.

anyway, I have 2000 Accord DX 5 gears, those with the power nothing
I replaced front pads and rear shoes, also flushed the fluids in all 4 wheels.
the car drive awesome, and break awesome as well so far.

only thing I noticed is that now I need to pull the handbrake lever about an 1"-1.5" higher then before.
I did search and few posts sending me to take off the plastic above the lever arm and find an 8/10mm nut I can adjust.

I'm just looking for an assurance as I thought maybe there was something I messed up with the drums and opening the interior plastic for adjusting is not the answer here?

More than likely you just need to tighten the shoes, What I do is adjust the shoes until I can feel a slight drag on the drums when I spin the drum, do you know how to adjust the shoes. The star adjuster that pushes outward on the shoes. It is supposed to be a self adjuster, have you tried many times to pull up on the handle to see if the self adjuster may take car of this looseness for you. Dont waste your time with the adjutment under the center console.

You should have loosened the self adjuster or the new shoes would not have fit into the drum, you also should have a little friction when you try to pull the drum off. If it just pulls off then the shoes are not spread out far enough. Just do a few clicks at a time and do both sides before testing your handle height. I think drum friction is more important, try to make both side feel the same.

I actually removed the adjuster and screwed the bolt in as much as I could, because first try I tried to bleed the brakes b4 putting the drum back on; this result in "too much open" so I took it apart and screwed it all the way in, put the drum and bleed.

I will try few notches at a time as you suggest. muchly appreciate your reply.

assuming doing this, will the nut under the center console will lower the lever even more?
I would love to have it as low as possible.

The star adjustment is to adjust, the cable adjust is to take up slack caused by cable stretch, cables should last the cars life, unless you live in a salt state.

You may get the affect you are looking for though.

Think of this though, in the military I had to jack up airplanes all the time, the jack had to be set up a certain way, if it was too close to the jack point, jacked up, the jack may sink even a little bit into the blacktop tarmack, down jack the airplane and the jack would be stuck under the plane requiring much more work to get it out.

Dont assume your star adjuster adjustment is perfect, I think it will self adjust even more outward in the near future and with your cable tighter now, it may start to drag all the time resulting in lose of HP and fuel economy, not to mention accellerated shoe wear. At least let it click up a few clicks, not just one or two.

just a follow up-
jacked the car today and adjusted it better. lever is now low again, even a bit lower then when I got the car. holds the car better as well!

Hey, my e-brake is loose. Like it wobbles when it is down. How do I tighten it up again?

don't know what you mean with "t wobbles when it is down"
my issues was that the I needed to pull the brake lever alot for it to hold the car properly.

As Duane_in_Japan suggested the shoes wern't tight to the drums.

turning the adjuster (part # 18 in the diagram) made them fit tight.

When my e-brake is down, I can move it left and right. There is a lot of play and I don't like it, even though it still works fine. Anyone have this problem or a solution for it?
