if you are overheating due to your headgasket there are two ways it can happen:
1) coolant is leaking from coolant gallies in the block into the cylinders or more likely the oil gallies, thus mixing coolant with your oil (VERY BAD!). cheack your oil to see if it looks like sludge.
2) combustion gas is leaking from inside the cylinders into the coolant gallies causing (hot) air to enter the coolant system and eventually make it boil over. To diagnose this there are two ways. If you know the level of your overflow tank when the car functions normally, you can observe its level at cold temp, then observe it at normal temp. when it starts to overheat, see if the level in the tank rises considerably and flows out of the overflow in the resivoir. if it does then you could be experiencing combustion gas entering the cooling system boiling it over, but it could also be caused by air in the system (improper bleeding of coolant system). the other, more reliable and definative method, is to take to a shop/gas station and have them test your coolant for combustion gas. they will use some device that attaches to your radiator cap and has a chemical that changes color if there is combustion gas in the system. this will let you know for sure if that is the issue.

do a compression test. or better yet do a leakdown test. that will pinpoint exactly where the leak could be. my old DA had a blown headgasket similar to what you described and I just did a compression. thank god I my head didn't warp due to the extreme overheating issues
