Default What Cat To Buy?

Hey everyone, I am currently running a random tecnology cat on my 00 SI and it makes my check engine light go on and today at a stoplight i smelt rotten eggs. My friends also say it smells awful when you follow my car which leads to me going w/ a bad cat. I don't want another rt b/c i've heard bad things about them. I just bought the car and it came w/ this cat on it. So what brands have you guys went with? I'd like it to be $100 or less, bolt in app, and not throw the inefficient operation cel. Thanks!

aftermarket "high flow" cat's are a crock of ****. they dont work well and dont make horsepower over a clean OEM cat.

Kamin, i didn't know you were into hondas. I'm grilledcheese33 from nico. I had no idea you were on HT. So are you saying to go to the dealer and buy a brand new one?

Just so all of you realize, a new OEM catalytic convertor for an EM1 (18160-P2P-A00) is $960 retail. Yes, you read that right. If you really want one, you can pick it up from one of the wholesaler sites (such as Majestic Honda or Saccucci Honda) for about $720 + shipping.

If your 1995 or newer (you're covered here) vehicle is under 8 years (you're covered here) or 80,000 miles (are you covered here?), you can have the cat replaced free under the federally mandated emissions equipment warranty.

haha im an old school honda head. cant bring myself to leave this place
and as much as i hate to say it, no aftermarket cat will work like an OEM one. its unforutionate, but true.

if you have to go aftermarket, ive heard good things about catco.

orly? Where would I go to get this replaced for free? And would that still apply to me having an aftermarket cat right now?

Cool, i just sold my 240 and am becoming a honda head slowly but surely, LOL. But like you and HT, I can't leave nico either, so o well. I want an oem one bad, but I can't pay that for one. Maybe I can find a used oem one from someone. That would probably be better than a new aftermarket, correct?

Whoops, I missed where you said you were running a Random Technology cat - my mistake. No, the warranty would obviously only apply to the OE cat.

Generally, yes. That would be a good idea. '99-00 EX and Si both share the same cat (18160-P2P-A00), so you can pull one from either of those. I'm not sure if the '96-98 EX cat will work, because it is showing a different part number.

BTW, do you have any fuel system mods that may be causing your engine to run rich?

The cat on my 00 civic went bad, I bought the cat for a 98 civic brand new from majestic, for some stupid reason it's MUCH cheaper like $430. The only difference is the location of the secondary 02 sensor, on the 99-00 they are labled as LEV so the 02 sensor is located in the middle of the cat, so if the cat goes bad the ECU will respond quicker. As for the 96-98 cat the 02 sensor is located at the very end of the cat, this one was better for me any way because the 02 sensor was hitting my shift linkage with the sensor in the 99-00 cat, I think it was becasue of the short shifter.

PS. my cat went bad because of a peice of **** MSD ignition, theres no good reason for a catalytic converter to go bad with only 50k miles on it.

It sounds like you spend alot on your car so go the extra mile and buy a Generic OBD2 Scan tool so you can monitor your secondary HO2S and actually see the condition of your CAT. This will really help you in the long run.
